Or you could be like Curley from the Three Stooges: eat burnt toast and a rotten egg — that’s good enough for him.

When I was a kid it was common to tell a growing kid that ate all the time that he had a tapeworm. I’ve also heard the old timers say to put some salt on your tongue and the tapeworm would come after it and you could pull it out that way. Either end is pretty bad from my perspective.

In fact, anyone can get tapeworms or roundworms that are commonly carried by dogs and cats. Their tiny eggs will get tracked into a house by their feet and yours. If you're not very careful about sanitation with your food and your kitchen counters, you can pick up some. If you pet an animal and then put a finger in your mouth, you could acquire worm eggs. You won't necessarily know about minor infestations right away. A younger sister of a woman friend had a long tapeworm come out of her and she went berserk. She had nightmares for a long time about it.

The tapeworm story is gross.

We never had tapeworms, but we had pinworms back in the 70's and 80's when I was a kid. My mom would go to the doctor and get some medicine for us to kill them. My kids didn't get them like we did. I suspect the antibiotics in our food has killed them off so we rarely get them these days. This guy just got some wild infected fish.

If you get a tapeworm there are remedies.
Yeah, it isn't some HUGE deal, but it is a good click bait story. I eat sushi and make raw salmon at home as well. There are preventative measures as in freezing at a very low temperature for a certain amount of time. These days most fish is frozen to make sure everything is killed anyway. Restaurants don't want to take the chance in the US or they will be shut down and their restaurant will go viral.

Also, I hate this story since now I have to worry that this might happen to me someday.
Poorly trained Sushi Chef and poor handling of raw fish.

If salmon is flash frozen after it's caught that kills said parasites. "Real" Sushi Chefs are trained to spot such things and cut them out or trash the fish/send it back to the purveyor.

Exactly. I suspect this guy ate gas station sushi or some hole in the wall Chinese buffet and the sushi was left out all day and that is why this happened to him.
