Humboldt Saskatchewan is a town of about 6,000 people.
The Broncos play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The players range in age from 16 to 20.
Some of the players come from other towns in Saskatchewan, Alberta, or Manitoba.
The team bus was on route to play a Friday night game in Nipawin the 5th game in their championship series . The bus was involved in a collision with a tractor trailer truck carrying a load of peat moss. The collision occurred at a intersection where 2 regional highways meet. The bus struck the truck trailer, head on. It appears that the truck was all most clear of the intersection, when the bus hit it. The front end of the bus was destroyed.
The outpouring of support from all parts of Canada has been immediate and widespread. In less than 24 hours the Go Fund Me account has gone over the 2 million dollar mark, and I fully expect it to go much, much higher.
Last nights ( Saturday ) NHL games all featured memorial tributes dedicated the Broncos. A number of the NHL teams wore Broncos sweaters , instead of their regular uniforms. Of the young men on that bus, no fewer than 6 have Fathers who are ex NHL players.
The nation is heart broken. The community of Humboldt is devastated. To lose so many young men in one instant is hard to comprehend. The survivors are all injured to one degree or another, and some will never fully recover. At least 3 are facing life as parapalegics. Life long care and support, what does that cost ? That is why the nation ( from all parts of the country ) are contributing, as they are able to .
Hockey Night in Canada on CBC, is a Saturday night tradition in Canada. Nation wide coverage of 3 games, back to back. Last night was the last game of the regular season for my beloved Maple Leafs. They won, but it was a very subdued crowd at the Air Canada Centre. The ownership did a simple but classy tribute to the "The Boys From Humbodlt ".
Damn, who has been cutting onions in here ?

What a horrible, horrible accident. All of the NHL teams paid tribute to the dead and injured at their games last night. The GoFundMe campaign has raised $3.5M so far.

Made my eyes tear up and remember the US Figure skating team. It took many years to rebuild the sport here after that. This will take years to rebuild the town. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-...in-plane-crash
The original GoFundMe campaign is up to $8.5M from over 100K donors, and there are 10 additional related GFM campaigns now. The long-term medical expenses for some of the injured are likely to be very high.
