(sorry, a little irritable because I had to endure a safe youth program last week. We get it. We already know it. Don't have sex with the kids. Don't text the kids sexual messages or pics. Don't make jokes about genitals to the kids. We all knew that coming in to this 5 hour program. We get it. Those who do this stuff already know they're not supposed to).
I have to take those programs too and they are not really about protecting the kids. We all know it. It's really about the organization protecting themselves legally -- "we provided specific training on ..." It's amazing how often someone will use the excuse of "no one told me that I couldn't ..."

One time, back when I was in school, the teacher couldn't get rid of her. She practically stalked him for months. Then he caved and got caught.

Other times, it was going on but there was some excuse like--he was helping her with her science project or it was for photography class. It's more unusual for it to be a woman teacher and, in this case, married and with a child? There need to be very strong penalties for this sort of thing. So what if the kid (boy OR girl) flirted and talked about sex--the teacher is a professional and if they're going to be doing that sort of thing, they have no right to be around kids.
I think these days it's both male and female teachers on an equal basis.

Who the hell promotes a predator to administration?!

I think many of them actually planned for years to become a teacher precisely because of the "opportunity" it would give them to engage in this kind of thing. They don't have relationships with men their own age because they don't want too.

These media accounts really stand out and if we add up the total number of teachers in these reported stories its still not statistically large. However, its clear to me that this type of predatory behavior goes on everywhere. I have to wonder how many of these stories are "hushed up" and never see the light of day.

Two such teachers were actually found out and prosecuted in the high school my children attended.

The other thing that allows this behavior to continue is that it isn't seen in nearly as harsh a light as a male teacher having sex with a female student. I suspect most male teachers caught in such behavior go to prison. The majority of female teachers who do this get a lesser sanction. Many serve short sentences in county jail and are banned from teaching. They get more lenient treatment because society doesn't view what they are doing nearly as negatively as a male teacher having sex with a student of the opposite sex.
I don't think most people go into teaching for this reason, but I do agree there is a double standard when it's a male teacher. It's sick either way.

Maybe many years ago it was a male teacher, but I don't think that is the case anymore.
Interesting double-edged sword. It's incredibly difficult for a woman to get a man convicted of rape and just as difficulty for HER to be convicted of rape. Procuring evidence and societal attitudes at play.

Of course they all know - it is to cover the liability of the school/company whatever so ignorance can't be used in any way as an excuse...that's all.

I said a "small group". No one in there right mind believes most male or female teachers go into education to take liberties with the students. However, I do believe there is a very small subset that does exactly that.

It's common knowledge that predators go where the kids are. If you want to have sex with underage kids, you're not going to look for work in an assisted living center.

When I was a snowbird in AL, I used to read the paper down there. Heart of the Bible belt, churches on every corner. Stories in the paper almost every day about sex fiends, and not your run-of-the-mill sex fiends either. Pastors, teachers, principals, coaches, scout leaders. If they weren't actually having sex with the kids, they had child porn on the computer.

Also, a lot of my fellow snowbirds were retired teachers/principals. We used to joke that they retired young because they were smart. I think the teaching profession is skewing younger because older teachers are retiring early. When I was in grade school we had a substitute teacher who was in her 80's (and a darn good one too).

The running joke in my former system was fooling around with a student put you on the fast track to the big chairs. Except it wasn't a joke.

I saw it too many times over my 31+ years. As recently as a couple years before I retired (that was 4 years ago). A second year teacher banging senior girls two at a time. Went into Admin training when caught, became a VP shortly after.

I think you're close.

I don't know if today's female predators plan it. They probably do. I can see there is a certain thrill for these women from knowing she can have just about any boy she wants and that she is in complete control. Where, when, how and how often are all up to her.

Contrast that with dating someone of her own age group. She risks rejection or not being asked out by the men she'd like to date.
