Thank goodness the poor baby seems to be doing well, and the border agents placed the 3 or 4-month-old cub in the care of a zoo in Brownsville. It appears to be a victim of the booming exotic animal trafficking trade in the US:
It's ridiculous how basically anyone can decide to buy an exotic animal and there is no oversight to make sure the animals have appropriate care and enough room. And it's perfectly legal. Just insanity. And potentially bad for the environment because, for example, areas like the everglades are now overrun with exotic snakes which are causing havoc among native animals. I also hate that it's legal to cage birds and other animals, so cruel and mean.
No surprise. Poor cub. I kind of wish that I could have found that duffel bag! If I lived in TX, I'd want to have a wildlife sanctuary with elephants and giraffes.
They also believe that there are currently more tigers living in captivity in Texas than in the wild, where their population is estimated to be around around 3,000.

No telling what else is smuggled across. My big worry is exotic snakes, and I'm talking about the ones with fangs. Abandon a sackful of cobras, and in a short time you'll have them crawling all over Texas.

I saw that on our news last night. Cutest thing but knowing all too well the dangers that encompasses. Glad to hear that things worked out. I'd take a wildlife sanctuary over a zoo but a zoo over the possibility the grown up version comes around a neighborhood and attacks someone.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, a tiger coming from Mexico would have come from a tropical environment. The only wild tigers I know of from south of the border are in tropical zones. Would such a tiger be happy in TX? Maybe I'm wrong about their natural habitat; maybe it includes non-tropical areas (speaking of Mex & Guatemalan tigers).

Tigers are from Asia. That animal did not originate in Central or South America.
