Where do people come up with this stuff, and more importantly, what makes people actually do these things?

What Is The Fainting Game? Grieving Mother Warns About Deadly Challenge After Son Dies

Quote:
A grieving mother in Utah is warning others about a new viral game spreading among children after her son died while playing with his friends over the weekend.

Tua Maui, 12 from South Jordan, Utah, was found unconscious in his home Friday after playing the “fainting game” with his friends. The dangerous game, which is also called the "choking challenge" or "pass out game," involves asphyxiation by either self-strangulation or hyperventilation, Dr. Jennifer Singleton, an emergency medicine physician at Beth Israel Deaconnes Medical Center in Boston, explained to Newsweek.

Google "autoerotic asphyxiation" and you'll see why this "game" is so popular. And hertfordshire is right: this is nothing new.

I would hardly call this a "new game" (although the viral part is new).

Way back in the dinosaur age, 1964, all the "cool kids" in my small town, rural Wisconsin junior high school were playing "the chocking game". Well, at least until someone died.

Whether, it is old or new, it is still very sad.

I remember doing this a few times back in the late 80s, early 90s in school. You would bend over an breath deeply a few times and then stand up and have another kid behind you squeeze you in a bear hug, and you would be out like a light but the key was, the other kids had to revive you within a certain period of time.

Its been so long since Ive done this, but I seem to remember a few kids and I having the same experiences while knocked out, I do recall we all thought certain parts were very odd and didnt make sense.

I can recall some neighborhood kids doing it in the mid 70s. Hardly new and fully plays into the perception of invincibility by most youth.

My older sister did that in the 1960s. She had a "pajama party" and I got to watch.

I also remember kids doing this when I was a teen in the 60’s. Even more gruesome, they would have another kid help them hang themselves until just before passing out with idea the other kid would cut them down before they would strangle to death. It didn’t always work out as planned.

This poor mother will have her work cut out for her if she is going to try to reach kids so inclined how not to be stupid.
