I take it more as a sign of a poor economy. Unemployed and underemployed people have more time on their hands, for standing in line for a discounted toy, that they wouldn't be able to afford to buy for full price. That's sad.
I had to check the date on this quote. I thought it was from 2009...
In the summer, I walk at the mall. Had no idea about any of this sales pitch. The parking lot had more cars than usual. I walk and get out before the stores open.
The line was at least 1/2 mile long. I saw no one look at the line and leave.
I don't think Build-a-Bear cares if you (generic you, not personal) get a bear on sale or not.
The company gets massive media exposure for their ridiculous stunt, and that's probably all they're really after. No publicity is bad publicity, right? How many posters upthread said they never had heard of BAB until all of the news stories this week?
If a handful of diehard customers happen to luck into a silly bear at a good price, that's just icing on the cake.
And yet......I remember getting to the theater at 6 AM to watch the 10 AM premiere of "Return of the Jedi".
People always just stare at me when I tell them this, but I have literally never watched any Star Wars movie all the way through... I did have a few pals in college who waited overnight for the release of the last Harry Potter novel. I just asked them to pick me up a copy
I think that's a result of where you live. The frenzy you see on TV is going to be extreme because that's what sells, but there are plenty of locations where things tend to get wild and rowdy on black friday. I haven't personally seen fights, but I have seen some pretty bad behavior, including people taking things from other peoples carts when they weren't paying attention, lots of shoving and pushing to be first in when the doors open, shelves wiped in minutes, etc.
Agreed. Sundaydrive you must live in a nice town or city. Wish my city had calmness like that. People freak out in public regularly in a lot of these parts where I live, Black Friday or not.
SO, families get to buy a bear for their child for $29....is that what I am reading?
Fair-use laws allow a couple of lines of the story to be posted in forums, with a link included.....that would have been useful here.
I believe the very first sentence in the thread answers your question.
