Wild fires have always occurred in the Pacific Northwest. I live in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Yesterday, I noticed a thick haze in the air. I couldn't smell any smoke though. Today, the air condition is worse making breathing difficult (and potentially dangerous) for some people, kids and senior citizens. I commented about the weird air to a friend, and it turns out that there are indeed forest fires burning in the mountains. The Willamette Valley is bordered by the Cascades on the east side and the Coast Range on the west side. Smoke is easily trapped in the Valley. Most of the fires in the mountains are usually caused by lightning. In the Valley, enormous grass seed fields would be burned annually around this time of year. Field burning is usually visible by the smoke columns, but I haven't noticed and lately. There is still some field burning in the Valley, but not as much as years ago.
