Even if it bluff charges, stand still and use spray if you have it. Only if the bear physically attacks you do you drop and play dead. At that point the bear has decided that you are a major threat. Playing dead removes the threat. There's no way you can outfight a grizzly. Of course all this is easy to write and hard to do....but people definitely survive these situations.

If a black bear actually physically attacks, it's with predatory intent, not defensive. This is when you fight back.
not only stand your ground but take the offensive and charge a griz, smack it across the face with a rolled up newspaper too if you have one

Yes, but even if you've been told what to do it can be incredibly difficult to override your natural fight or flight (or freeze) instinct. Especially for a child.

I wonder how effective a taser would be against a bear? A cattle prod- which is somewhat like a taser, but on a stick-- might be a good defense. Perhaps someone on the forum who lives in bear country might have some knowledge about this.

Fish and Game in Alaska tried these out and apparently decided they may have some benefit in certain situations, but these were high-powered weapons specifically for use on large wildlife by trained staff.

A regular taser wouldn't be able to penetrate a bear's thick fur and hide very well, and you really don't want to **** off a bear.

Fearless and defenseless are a bad combination
We have taught our kids self confidence and fearlessness with no basis

What on Earth is this ridiculous comment supposed to mean?

Oh -- you couldn't be bothered to read the article before you decided to make this story into an example of why you dislike the generations that followed yours.

Let's review:

*Kid and parents are hiking.
*Bear comes barreling out of the brush.
*Kid runs away.

And yet you think this story - again, because you didn't bother to read it - is some sort of parable about the perils of 'confidence and fearlessness'? Pray tell, what exactly does running away from a bear have to do with 'confidence and fearlessness'?

How about we talk about bears and the wilderness, and not your thoughts on how sucky today's young whippersnappers are?

No way I'd want to wait until a bear got close enough to jab it with a cattle prod! Bear spray's general effective range for the first shot is about 25 feet assuming you are not shooting upwind.

A bear would not want anything to do with me. The smell of me ****ting my pants would put him off his meal.

I should probably get a couple of canisters to keep around the place. Any certain kind you recommend?

Counter Assault and UDAP Pepper Power are both good brands.
