holy cow. dynamite just left lying around in the basement by previous residents?
She's lucky to be alive or not blinded. You know, dynamite sticks do look a bit like those roadside flares that you whack on the pavement, to start burning. But lighting dynamite and not knowing what it was? Sounds like a scene from a Roadrunner and Coyote cartoon.
The article leaves me a bit confused. Was it dynamite with a cap in it or was it a large firework? I'm taking it was really a large firework and not actual dynamite.

They probably looked like the example provided in post #18.
They didn't have any tapers, Yankee Candles or flashlights? Nothing?
In some states. Until this year, all fireworks, including the little sparklers, were illegal here in New Jersey. Last year the law was changed to allow for some types, but not the exploding kind.
I didn't know about the law change and was shocked to see fireworks for sale in the local chain drugstore a couple of months ago. Usually people run over to Pennsylvania to buy them.
But it's nice, because the people across the park from where I live have been lighting fireworks all summer without fear of attracting the cops, and I got to enjoy them.
Yep, at first I thought it might be an elderly woman with poor eyesight but no, a 30 year old woman with 2 children.
So, so sorry for her and this horrific accident regardless of the seemingly "stupid" circumstances.
Dynamite left in the basement by previous owners of the home, was there no home inspection by new owners or home inspector before sale? Just wondering about that???
But I am also very grateful that the children or other family members were not harmed. Jesus, Mary & Joseph!
Since fireworks are illegal, they would never have thought that this was dynamite. I've never seen dynamite and I don't know what it looks like............?.
Even if you've never seen dynamite, you wouldn't mistake it for a candle. I assume you know what a road flare looks like and don't think those are candles? ( I hope)
Fireworks, legal or not, have nothing to do with it. Dynamite is not fireworks. It wouldn't matter if a person never saw fireworks, dynamite still doesn't look like a candle. And in the dark, it doesn't feel like a candle.
Oh wait.... maybe the "victim" had never seen a candle before?
Unless someone is completely clueless it isn't possible to mistake dynamite for candles. That's like mistaking a cow for a saddle.
Yes indeed.
