Pretty harsh sentence, but some people just have no respect for other countries. Two teens spray painted an ancient wall in Thailand. Stupid, just stupid.
Your subject line is factually incorrect. First of all, they are not teens, they are both 23 years old. Second, they face up to 10 years and have not been sentenced. The article is 5 short paragraphs, didn't you read it?

All I did was repeat the title of the article.

Yea, at 23 what sympathy would anyone have. Idiots.

Hey, I'm not trying to attack you. I clicked on the article, which is titled "Brit, Canadian face 10 years in jail for spraying Thai wall" btw and found something different from the title of this thread.
I don't know what I think a proper punishment for this crime would be. I think regardless of age 10 years in prison (unlikely) is harsh. If they were teenagers and not 20-somethings I would think it was extra harsh.
You can't just blame this on a moment of drunken inspiration, they planned vandalism. Why else would they happen to have a can of spraypaint with them?

A proper punishment is whatever the local authorities and courts decide it is. We may think it's excessive, or draconian, or downright evil; but what we think matters not one bit. Their house, their rules.
Apparently, the one on the left is a girl. Personally, I'm not seeing it; but oh well. And the one on the right is wearing a shirt that would be considered offensive in pretty much every country on earth, much less in Thailand.
I'll bet they're regretting having crawled out of mommy's basement and gone on vacation to a faraway land that takes certain things a bit more seriously than they're used to.
