This reminds me of a time I was at my bank in California. I had just moved from Maryland and the clerk actually acted like Maryland was another country! crazy!

Several Canadian provinces say "Canada" on them, they have to because Americans are so ignorant.

A friend from British Columbia was asked by an American cop where that was. He said it was a penal colony off the coast of South America. The gullible cop smiled and waved him on.

Well, people ask what kind of money the should bring for their trip to Hawaii . Also, do we live in grass shacks and do kids get to leave school to go surfing when the waves are good? Ugh.

Having lived in both New Mexico and Hawai'i for many years, I've gotten a lot of stupid comments. Heck, I got stupid comments when I lived in Arizona, too.

When I moved to NM, many people were concerned about me traveling "out of the country" and what if I couldn't get back in to visit family? And was my passport up to date? When I moved to another state afterwards, a woman I met somewhere said something about how sad it was that the Navajos were extinct. I responded that my family will be really bummed to hear that they're extinct. (Hello, one of the biggest indigenous populations in the US? Extinct?)

For Hawai'i, like Melaniej65 said, it was the grass shacks and skills and coconut bras and needing a passport to visit (and did we speak English there?)

Arizona, it was usually all about how hot we were all year, when half the state gets 4 seasons and have ski resorts (we lived close to a ski resort). People would send my babies shorts and t-shirts for Christmas and mean for them to wear them through the winter. All of AZ is NOT Phoenix, people!

Oh well, great opportunities to educate people in the stuff they must have slept through in school (or never got the chance to know).

I've heard about a couple instances of this kind of thing happening over the years. People really don't know much about anything do they?

apparently this happens to other people too?

We need to change Mexico to Old Mexico so people know that people from New Mexico are not Mexicans

This surely is a new level of ignorance on the part of a public servant and the supervisor. Sounds like they are janitor material.

In this day and age with cell phones it shouldn't have been an issue very long. Get google and or google maps up, show the clerk. Really can't believe it was a supervisor that also didn't know.

I have a government job, and my 120+k boss could barely speak a word of English. Those who speak French or Creole had to translate. Wonder how he’s faring in his new office.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if the clerk and supervisor in this case were born here.
