In 2015 a United States Postal Service stamp was issued commemorating Maya Angelou with the Joan Walsh Anglund quote "A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song", though the stamp mistakenly attributes the quote to Angelou.
The 1932 Arbor Day stamp featured a photograph of the two living children of the Director of Engraving and Printing in violation of post office policies.
I may be completely out of line in my thought process, but I think the post office purposely creates error stamps now and then just to keep the public interested in stamp collection.
Jeez, who cares? If the stamp elicits the correct mood, what does it matter exactly what the original detail was. Say the US wants to make a set featuring seashells. The find a photo of perfect specimen, and submit it to the artist to use as a model for the design. But it turns out that the original was collected on a beach in Mexico. OMG, the end of the world, start firing the people to blame and recall the stamp.
