3 months in jail...for this kind of crime...its going to seem ALOT longer when they are on the inside! They will be violated and tormented night and day by other inmates.(harming animals is up there with harming children when it comes to 'prison rules')

I'll just say that I concur with most in this thread, not only in that these two cretins didn't get half the kicking around they deserved and that I have zero tolerance for any kind of animal cruelty.

But...

Would it all have been better had the cubs not been 'shrieking'?

Of course not, but CNN probably used that headline to demonstrate how lacking in compassion these people are. Apparently all of it was caught on camera, including the sounds.

Someone claiming legality under the "traditional and customary" rule is going to make that defense long and loud to everyone who will listen. This state has lots of case law to demonstrate it. The accused aren't going to dream up some weak fib and destroy the evidence.

More likely this cretin felt he was doing his civic duty...eliminating nuisance bears that deprive citizens of their essential moose meat; the meat that is supposed to be available within a comfortable morning's driving distance from Wasilla. "Everyone knows" (sarcasm so thick I can barely type) the bear overpopulation needs to be culled. When they aren't ravaging trophy moose they are threatening children...and the bears manage this feat even while hibernating or being too young to leave a den.

What we can hope is that in addition to the paltry sentence they end up branded and socially ostracized by people they care about.

Did someone say it was limited to Alaska and happened nowhere else? I must have missed that. I didn't see it.

Comment of the year so far.

Anyway, if these a$$holes decided to kill the mother bear for whatever f'd up reason, it's probably better they killed the cubs as well, what chance would they have had?

No chance. The entire episode is extremely ugly and cruel. Some of the current events sometimes posted here regarding animals turn my stomach.

Hunters hate poachers.

That said, fish and game laws are some of the most strict in the US. Very harsh penalties.

This thread/case addresses poaching from a different angle and brings in 150 year old treaty stipulations:

Native American tribe member who killed elk to feed family asks Supreme Court to throw out poaching conviction
