I KNEW somebody would surely bring this cold snap as a "nifty argument" against "global warming"!! (Which is in quotes because it should be more properly called "Climate changing")

Aaaand… it only goes to show that one never bothered to find out what this "global warming" was actually all about!! (If ONLY it was as simple as "warming"!!)

Well, not really. Some places will get warmer, some will actually get cooler, but the overall trend is that weather patterns WILL be changing - and weather extremes would get harsher! (Once enough ice melts in the Arctic, that will lower oceans salinity and slow down/shut down the ocean currents, which had been doing a great job of leveling out the extremes until now... As in, bringing warm water from the equator, up North, and visa versa).

Once that is no longer working, hot places will get HOTTER, cold places will get COLDER, hurricanes will be hella stronger, yet also more common for major weather systems to sit for far too long over any one area, doing far more damage than before, etc., etc.

The "climate" has been "changing" ever since pre-humans decided they didn't want to live in trees anymore. And even before that too, like during the Jurassic period with the dinosaurs; it was much warmer back then. All long before cars, factories, and methane-farting cows existed.

The governor of Florida banned terms "global warming" et al. from official state publications. Which I commend him for. (But he also denied funding to Florida passenger rail, so I kind of have a beef with him too.) Anyway, he did offer useful synonyms, like "climate change = erratic weather patterns" and "sea level rise = coastal flooding". So why can't the chicken littles use synonyms too, rather than toot the "global warming" horn? If anything, it'll help them with their PR. I mean, if you talk about "warming" in a -25*F cold snap, you shouldn't be surprised that people mock you.

This is basically the "erratic weather patterns" I just mentioned. And if they keep increasing, the cold-weather states will continue to depopulate faster and faster. Heck, it's happening already. And on a more global scale, if much of the Northern Hemisphere gets colder (despite the "warming" ), it'll send a deluge of immigrants to warm-weather countries, both First World like New Zealand (for those who can afford it), and Third World like Myanmar (for those who can't).

Some people are not so clueless as to fail to understand what 'the world' means.

71% of the planet is the ocean. Of the remaining 29%, North American constitutes less than 1/6th of that landmass. And only a portion of North America was effected by the recent deep freeze.

To claim that because a relatively small portion of the globe was unusually cold for a period of several days thereby proves that the entire globe is not warming in the long term demonstrates a special kind of ignorance. It's like walking by three skinny people in the mall and concluding that proves the obesity rate isn't increasing.

By the way, where I am right now it was -32F four days ago. Way below average. But yesterday, today, and tomorrow we have highs around 40F - well above average. By your logic, that proves the planet is getting warmer. (Note: I didn't say that proves the planet is getting warmer - it only does so by your warped and inane logic, which is so nonsensical and faulty that no rational and informed person would employ it)

Climate denialists are right up there with clowns who claim the Earth is really 6000 years old (it's a vast geology conspiracy to claim otherwise!) or that smoking doesn't cause cancer (it's a vast medical conspiracy to claim otherwise!). They are oblivious to the way they serially embarrass themselves with their illogical sophistries.

I heard a coworker talking about this from a different perspective, something Ive never thought about, we get these extreme cold temps every year for the most part, but deaths from exposure continue to happen year after year...why are humans not 'adapting' or evolving to their environments? It seems logical that since this has been something certain areas have to deal with every year, the human body would 'adapt' in order to survive, maybe adding more body fat before winter comes or some other physical mechanism that would allow the body the survive extreme cold.
Uhhhmmm...because adaptation at that level requires evolutionary changes that occur over many generations?

Rather than counting on evolution there needs to be education and better technology that people can afford in terms of outerwear and even alerts to emergency services if body temp gets to low (or too high).

Every other species of animal adapts and evolves to whatever climate they live in (over time of course), also, when that climate changed, the animals changed too, if it suddenly got much colder, they grew more fat, fur, feathers, etc so they could survive the new climate.

We should be seeing at least some changes now though, Another poster mentioned the Inuit people, the changes to them has been noticeable, why no one else?

There's others. The Masai are very tall and lean. Pygmies are, well, you know. All adapted to their climate.
