Yes, it’s a dangerous thing to do. A stranger can walk up saying “Debbie, Hi!” and they’ll stand there thinkibgvegetevfo I know him from, when it’s a trick. They earn kids about this, cause pedophiles have stalked kids Facebook pages (by pretending to be a kid), they know her first name and where she goes, when her softball game is, and approach using her name, saying he’s a friend of her dad or whatever, and the kids are vulnerable.
I noticed today one of my coworkers has her first name on her plate, and it’s a very uncommon name. I might be paranoid, but I wouldn’t do it. To be honest I don’t see the purpose.

Every State I have lived in here in the U.S. charges an annual fee for such a plate. $20 here in Montana.
Even if you are an Amateur Radio Operator, and want a plate with your call sign on it for identification in an emergency, $20 thank you.
$30 in Alaska. I could get an Amateur Radio Operator license plate, but if you have someone's call sign it's just a few key strokes and you have their name and address.

My wife's daughter has had her first name personalized license plate for going on 20 years. Never a problem. Some people are just paranoid.
Can you do that in Canada? There's no system to do that in the US.
Yes you can. Most real estate records are online and their are all sorts of free and paid people searches also online in the US. And with his name it would be a pretty easy search.
