There used to be a Dr Slaughter office close to my house, had his name in big red letters on the sign. I guess he was trying to be funny?!

The man decided to paint it in huge letters on the back of his truck, along with the name of the province and its motto effectively making a huge vanity plate :

The state manufactures and issues license plates. The state does not want to be part of causing offense.

The state neither manufactures nor issues bumper stickers. Therefore, the state is not a part of any offense caused by whatever idiotic bumper sticker a person slaps on their vehicle.

Good Lord, how can anyone not see this completely obvious distinction?

PS - Why do people refer to the government as 'they', as if there is one small group making every rule? The DMV (or the state equivalent, in this case) makes the rules for what is permissible on vanity plates. Any rules regarding displays on bumper stickers would be made by the legislature. Do you think the head of the DMV huddles with the legislative leaders to make sure they're all singing the same tune? Along with every head of every other department? Hint: that's not how it works, nor should it be.

My grandmother's maiden name was Dick. So you either had to have a good sense of humor or let it get under your skin. I've heard the family reunion t-shirts we're hilarious. I recently reconnected with a relative and asked her about growing up with Dick as a last name. She said it was pretty funny most of the time, but she has a great sense of humor. By the way, my great grandfather's name was Peter Dick. Wonder if that name could cause a problem with the DMV?

LOL Who needs a vanity plate?

Apparently, you can't keep a$$man down:
