My thought exactly!

We are animal lovers, and pamper our pets. However, we had a stray/feral we fed, but he wouldn't come within 10 ft of us! We had to put the food down and back away, then and only then would he touch it! There was no way anyone could catch that cat for any reason! he came to our house regularly, he would sit at the back door until we noticed, then he'd back away while we put his food/water down, then eat. I worried about him in cold weather, too, but he always managed to survive!

Nowadays we pamper our cats but back in the old days most cats were outdoor cats or barn cats, especially in rural areas. If in good health, cats can thrive outside even in very cold weather and actually enjoy it. For extreme weather (blizzard or ice storm or subzero) they always made sure there was somewhere for the cat to get into a shelter (unheated garage, barn or outbuilding).
