You can never be too careful about the people you leave an infant or very small child in the care of. These days you just don't know what will set off a kid.

By the way, the minimum age to babysit another child in Maryland without adults present is 13 years of age.

An 11-year-old girl has been charged in Maryland with first-degree child abuse resulting in death after she allegedly assaulted a 1-year-old she was left to care for, police said.

Prince George's County police are not naming the girl who was arrested because she is being charged as a juvenile, but they said the victim was Paxton Davis of Washington.

When I was 7 I was left to babysit my 6 year old cousin, 4 year old brother, and 3 year old cousin. If they did anything bad while in my care I was beaten, sometimes with a board or belt. I never once abused any of them.

Because an 11 year old is still a child, they don't have the maturity or the capability of controlling their own emotions when frustrated, angry, tired, etc. so they act on them and don't think of or realize the consequences.

Things have definitely changed since I was 11. At that there were times I watched several kids.

This sounds awfully familiar. Wasn't there a case similar to this a few months ago? Last year sometime?

This^^^ with that being said I think it might be quite possible that the 11 year old may have some underlying issues in addition to just being possibly unaware that her actions would cause significant harm.

Tragic for all involved.

Yes, I think the parent doesn't know her child as well as she thought she did. What a rude awakening! The girl managed to beat and kill the baby within the time of a short errand to a local store. We may never know if it was in response to the baby starting to cry, or if it was completely unprovoked. Only the kid knows. Still, that's a scary kid.
