A woman near where I used to work in NYC approached me and asked for money for diapers for her baby. She had to be about 60 years old. There are a lot of beggars in NYC, but that one's story made me laugh loudly.
I had a man ask me for a hamburger one day. I took him into the restaurant and told him to order whatever he wanted. I would do that every day of the week but I will not hand out cash anymore. We give to the local food bank and church. Shelters and churches are usually the first ones that get asked to help when someone is really in need.
I give to roadside panhandlers sometimes. It makes me feel good. Totally selfish.
There is something gratifying about connecting briefly with another human being and acknowledging their humanity. The price is a dollar bill or a handful of change.
If I saw this woman, though, with the old "hungry baby" story, I'd pass her by.
For actually feeding people, I donate regularly to a soup kitchen/food pantry and to City Harvest.
Get a job as a cashier somewhere and you will be surprised by how many people with $500 coach, Michael Kors handbags are on EBT cards. Michael Kors crap is really big with the welfare queen set, people buy what they want and beg for what they need.
I agree - I feel the same way when I see someone using EBT when they have numerous tattoos and piercings. Those things are not cheap and tells me that they don't handle their financials properly.

Sometimes they are cheap or free because they have a friend practicing or doing it for them. That's why they don't look too good many times!
Why would they bring her from Queens to Union NJ? Wonder where the others were dropped off. Wish I could tell where in Union she was, almost looked like Route 22
According to reports from Europe, this is a typical m.o. for Roma migrants, though in Europe, they usually use children for the panhandling and pocket-picking. These are organized operations.
I can't believe how many naïve people there are that actually give to these panhandlers.

I have a friend who was legitimately homeless. So when I see a homeless person, I have compassion for them. (although my friend made some bad choices which contributed to him being homeless) However, this story somewhat reminds me of a time that I got fooled.
About a decade ago, I was at a gas station and a man came up to me and asked me for my help. He told me that he needed some gas to see his son in prison and his tank was on empty. (he pointed to his vehicle, which was a "beater) However, instead of asking for me to put gas in his tank, he wanted a "couple of dollars." I didn't carry cash at that time so I told him that I couldn't help him. I proceeded to go inside of the gas station and I had a "change of heart." I decided to put gas in his tank and I told the gas station attendant to put $10 dollars at pump #1. After doing so, I went looking for him. I saw him telling the exact same story to another person. I kindly interrupted them and I told him that I put ten dollars towards his tank. He looked at me with a slight disgust on his face, and faintly and ungratefully said, "thanks" Then he proceeded to tell his story to the woman.
About a month later, I went to the gas station across the street. The EXACT same man came up to me and he was going to tell me the EXACT same story and he had the EXACT same car. Before he had a chance to finish the story, i said, "how's your son?" He looked at me with such confusion and I said, "I helped you out last month at the gas station across the street. I'm the one who put paid ten dollars worth of gas in your tank and you did not even appreciate it. " He looked at me and walked away. I went inside to pay for my gas, and when I came out, he was telling the exact same story to another unsuspecting woman. I saw her reach down into her purse. That's when I decided to approached her and I told her that he is a scam artist, who told the EXACT same story, at the gas station across the street.
I feel bad for the homeless but these con artists **** me off.
I dont think this concerns police and they should not be making comments about it.
Its up to individuals if they want to give money to someone asking for it, I do not need someone else (especially police) telling me who deserves it and who does not...thats up to me to decide.
If police want to warn me of scams, they should be instructing people to avoid local banks, payday loan places, buy here pay here car lots,etc etc too!!
Donating to scam artists encourages more scam artists to panhandle. The police are informing the public as to which are scams. If you don't like it, "decide" to encourage scam artists out of your own pocket, but don't tell the police how to do their job.
