A jury convicted Jason Colton, 42, of 2017 killing of Ramis Jonuzi. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but denied murder.

A court heard two housemates had held the 36-year-old down, while Colton beat and strangled him for not paying the A$210 (£113, $149) he owed.

During the trial in March, the Supreme Court of Victoria heard that Mr Januzi had rented the room in Brighton East, a suburb in Melbourne, to have a cheap and stable place to stay while he dealt with "personal issues".

The bricklayer first rented the room for three nights from the three men - Colton, landlord Craig Levy and housemate Ryan Smart - before asking to extend his stay by a week for A$210.

However when check-out day arrived, he had less than A$10 in his account and was unable to pay the bill.

Wow, all his could’ve been avoided had the owner simply extended the stay through the Airbnb site (in which the guests card would’ve been declined anyway), instead of the verbal agreement.

Or he could’ve just not killed the man. He’s definitely not getting his money back now.

Hmm. I'm assuming the owner thought he could avoid paying the AirBNB fee associated with the extension. Renter had a good track record of paying until he didn't. Not sure was up with renter, but owner was a bad guy.

Geez... No need to be so uptight. It was merely a statement -- and a true one regardless of what ensued. Airbnb has the "modify" feature specifically for this. OP was not implying that the killing was justified.

Obviously the people involved in this killing have deeper issues than anger over an unpaid bill. All of the alternative outcomes to the situation suggested here only apply to well adjusted, and fairly normal people. I don't think that describes these individuals.

I can't help but picture people showing up, expecting a room and nobody answering the door..."Helooooo?"

Prosecutors told the court that Colton beat his guest until he lost consciousness. The housemates then dragged him out in the garden where they continued the attack.
Colton had said he only wanted to cause Mr Jonuzi to pass out, not kill or seriously injure him.
He only wanted the victim to pass out? So AFTER he passed out, they dragged him into the garden, where they continued beating on him?

All of them were found guilty of manslaughter. The accomplices were sentenced and jailed last September.
