Such an odd story with many twists and turns. Very heartbreaking for the father. Imagine your son goes missing in 2011 and then turns up in 2019... only the boy claiming to be your son turns out not to be your son. In fact, turns out not to be a boy at all.

His real name is Brian Michael Rini, 23, of Medina, Ohio, an official with the Newport Police Department in Kentucky told NBC News.

"Although we are disappointed that this turned out to be a hoax, we remain diligent in our search for Timmothy, as our missing person's case remains unsolved," officials with the Aurora Police Department said.

DNA results show person claiming to be Timmothy Pitzen, who has been missing since 2011, is not him

Pathetic. Couldn't he have found something better to do with his time?

I am curious as to whether this ********* thought he was just going to step into Timmothy Pitzen's life like the son in the movie Changeling.

Has he never heard of paternity tests? Or DNA tests?

What an incredibly cruel hoax to play on the Pitzen family.

Heartbreaking for the family, but this is a 23-year-old man who has a history of filing false reports.

Terrible is more like it.

Attention, notoriety, fame..... take your pick. Unfortunately there are probably many more out there just like him. Sorry the family had to go through this. What a dirt bag.

This is so sad. I followed this case and a few others. I was hopeful. What a sick person. A 23 yr old con artists trying to pass himself off as a 14 year old.

There is a longer thread about this case in the True Crimes forum.

My guess is that authorities were immediately suspicious once this guy was examined at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, as it would have been obvious that he was neither a child nor an adolescent. Still, he knew Timmothy's middle name and his exact birthday.

The imposter just got out of prison about a month ago - perhaps he used prison library resources and hit upon the Timmothy Pitzen case and became obsessed with it.

Such a terrible thing for the Pilzen family - at least the hoax lasted less than 48 hours.
