A Texas teen is in a critical condition following a freak accident at a water park that authorities said might have been caused by a dare gone wrong.
On Wednesday, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told local news outlet KTRK that a 14-year-old, later identified by family and friends as Caden Strimple, was in the hospital with “serious internal injuries” after he was sucked into a drain in a pool at Fun Town Water Park in Crystal Beach, Texas on Saturday.
It's always sad when young people find out that bad things can, and do, happen to them. I imagine the loss of their immortality comes as quite a shock to them..... if they live through it.
Some years ago in the Twin Cities, a 6-year-old girl in a kiddie pool at a local golf club had part of her intestinal tract sucked out of her body by the drain. She finally succumbed to her injuries a few months later.
Before that, the 7-year-old granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker was drowned at a party in Virginia when pinned to a swimming pool drain by suction.
As a child of the 80s and 90s, I remember hearing stories about this somewhat regularly. Our parents always warned us of this. Don’t dare anyone. Don’t touch the drains. Don’t even go near them.
There are so many things like this where everyone focuses on it and is cautious. Then, after a while, people let their guard down.

Yes, it does. I fell off of a second story roof when I was 14. Life hasn't been the same since. In a way, I sometimes wish that I had died. I have so many health problems because of that accident that I can barely keep track of them.
A 12 hour surgery saved my life, but I'm not convinced that it was a good thing.
