How do you "fall" into an elevator shaft with the elevator still in place?

He tried to get out and had limbs crushed between the wall and elevator when it shot down. I wish I could unsee that.

Horrible. Yes backpack guy was really lucky. Missed death by a millisecond. I didn’t realize that there was so much room between the elevator and the shaft wall. In traditional elevators there’s only a few inches.

When he tried to open the doors the elevator should have stopped!! (I think most do)

That safety feature that was disabled most likely prevented it from working as it should...

Why would anyone disable that??

That is absolutely shocking. That poor man, his family, and to those who witnessed it.

Wow...

I'll never feel so safe again in an elevator. Its system of safeguards must have had some sort of tragic failure that I hope the manufacturers will redesign to prevent this from recurring.
