Civil War Cannonballs Found on South Carolina Beach in Aftermath of Hurricane Dorian | Mental Floss
Hurricane Dorian skimmed the United States' East Coast last week, creating a trail of damage residents are still dealing with. But it wasn't just trash and debris the storm surges left behind: As WCSC reports, two cannonballs dating back to the Civil War were discovered on Folly Beach in South Carolina in the aftermath of the storm.

No surprise. I've found a ton of civil war bullets back when I was into metal detecting here in SC.

Folly Beach is just a few miles, as the crow flies, from Fort Sumter.

It really does give us an idea of the power of the storm, that it could wash up 150 year old objects from the sea floor and deposit them on a beach.

They were probably cast from lead, which doesn't rust.

There wasn't.. To an untrained eye, I don't think that is recognized as a civil war era cannonball.

And, it notes that 16 were found after Hurricane Matthew.

note to self, if I find a cannonball... don't call the government.

I'd be pissed, I'd want to either keep it or auction it off to a serious collector and make a couple dollars
