A Wisconsin mom whose sons ran a THC vape cartridge ring was busted for her role in the multimillion-dollar enterprise, authorities said.

Brothers charged in massive counterfeit ring that made THC vaping cartridges
Courtney Huffhines, 43, was charged Tuesday in Kenosha County on six felony drug-related counts in the large-scale scheme to produce counterfeit vape cartridges, news station WTMK-TV reported.

Her two sons — Tyler Huffhines, 20, and Jacob Huffhines, 23 — were charged last month in the illegal vaping manufacturing business deemed by authorities to be the “largest of its kind.”

Prosecutors said the enterprise operated out of the mom’s real estate office in Union Grove.

“We believe she is right in the mix of this entire operation,” Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth told news station Fox6 Now.

Courtney allegedly then used a stolen identity to help move the illegal business to a condo in Bristol.

“She had rented it, ultimately, to her two boys under a fake name,” Beth said.

Authorities raided both locations and discovered more than 30,000 vape cartridges filled with THC, as well as nearly 100,000 Mason jars filled with THC oil.

Inside the realty office, there were cooking pots, hot plates, vape cartridges and latex gloves that were used as supplies in the business, officials said.

“When they did the search warrant, investigators called me and said, ‘We hit the mother lode here,'” Beth told Fox6 Now. “They said, ‘This is one of the labs.'”

Text messages between Courtney and her sons revealed they shared articles about the recent vaping health crisis in the days prior to the bust, prosecutors said.

“Might need to look into another business,” one message read.

Courtney was released Tuesday on $100,000 bail and scheduled to appear next in court on Oct. 11, according to court records.
Case of personal greed ruining her family. She's a Real estate agent, she should be doing very well and knows money laundering can be caught easily these days with banking regulations and tech.

Geez, if they had that much invested in it, I wonder why they just didnt go legit and form a vape company, there are 100s of 1000s of small vape companies in existence now, whats one more?.

They can’t, weed is not legal in Wisconsin. Even in the states where it is legal, it is very difficult to get a license. It’s just like trying to get a liquor license. They limit the number, and it requires an extensive background check. There are farmers in California who have been growing weed for decades, who cannot get business licenses.

They were making counterfeit THC vape cartridges, in a state where weed is not even legal. All these young people who have been getting lung damage and respiratory illnesses and even the eight deaths, are now being linked to these THC counterfeit cartridges vs e-cigs as was first thought. There is no standard for what the fillers are when it’s a counterfeit product. No testing for contaminates, etc. Those fillers are where they think the problems are arising from.

Of course the solution is to legalize across the country, because they don’t have this problem in the weed legal states where it’s regulated. But for the time being they are going to play whack a mole and attempt to halt this by stopping one counterfeiter at a time.

Even where THC is legal lung injury and death from vaping occurred, probably from THC vape cartridges. Legalizing THC isn't the fix.

The other problem was the mom used shell companies to hid income and that's what really made the Feds investigate them. That's how Feds connect the dots to various criminals is through money wiring monitoring.

Yes, the entire "vaping menace" is odd to me.

You have tons of illegal vaping items, not to mention the lord knows what that gets put into illegal cartridges (meth, crack, synth drugs cooked in someones garage etc.)

Well gee, how is it any different than deaths from back-alley plastic surgery? I wouldn't think that would make a fair basis for condemning plastic surgery in general.

*shrug*

I don’t think so. People have been vaping in Colorado for years now, this is recent and sudden, and remains a very tiny percentage of the people who vape. If it was simply vaping, there would be tens of thousands of people getting sick. Legal products are subject to quality standards and tightly regulated. To me that points to a bad batch of counterfeits, some kind of contaminant. Everyone and his brother are making counterfeits over the past year it has grown to huge proportions. You can buy the empty cartridges on EBay and Amazon in cases.
