In all seriousness.... I used to live in upstate NY in the country and loved biking, it was quiet, peaceful and very relaxing. When I moved to NYC it was anything but.. I just don't like the attitude that anyone or any organization would mandate my riding a bicycle....
~smile~ try going anywhere on a bike in South Texas......

Tis been fun yanking your chain TW.....
I don't think anyone here talked about mandating you riding a bicycle. So you biked on roads in Upstate NY? No accidents? Didn't feel like you were in danger of death at times.
Upstate NY is where I really got into cycling for both transportation and recreation. Mmm. Yea for steep hills, snow, ice, mostly friendly drivers and some great countryside.

My nearest neighbor was seven miles away hardly any traffic on the roads.. no no accidents.. danger of death? ROFL you gotta be kidding. Only time I've felt that was in Nam.
Although I enjoy riding for exercise and recreational purposes, bikes will not replace cars for anyone who needs to travel more than few miles while carrying any kind of luggage. It's not fun biking to class with a notebook computer, several textbooks and other materials in a backpack while traversing the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's also not terribly comfortable biking to work with your suitcase and showing up with sweat stains all over your dress clothes, particularly if you have to wear a blazer or jacket. For people dealing with wild weather conditions like snow/blizzards, rain storms, 100+ degree heat, etc, biking to work/school is just not going to happen.
get a large messenger bag from seagull or reload and carry your things in a comfortable manner instead of in a backoack. also, ride in cycling gear and change before work. simple solutions really.
