My department head commutes 16 miles each way on bike everyday. 2 miles is nothing.

With that short of a distance, I don't know if it is even worth getting on your bike. Maybe you can incorporate additional mileage to make it worthwhile.

Easily. I had a bike commute of three miles on one assignment.

I actually think that there is no firm answer to such a question. I ride my bike roughly 20 miles a day, usually at least five times a week - for fun. To me, a two-mile commute would never strike me as something that could be too far.

My neighbor, however, would think that two miles is just about as far as the distance between the earth and the moon if traversing it involves anything other than a motorized vehicle.

In the end, it's really an issue of a person's fitness level. If you are physically fit, two miles will barely be enough to warm you up, if you are in decent shape, you'll find two miles a bit more strenuous than going from the couch to the fridge. However, if you are completely out of shape, two miles can be a bit of a challenge.

Since you are wondering if two miles is reasonable, I would assume that you are not exactly in good shape. Thus, I would suggest that you take it easy - go slow, go steady, and leave plenty of time until you have established a reasonable time you need to bike the distance. With every day, it will get easier - which doesn't mean that every day will be easy. Your legs might hurt, you might not "feel like it," and you might even dread it. In the end, the more often you do it, the easier it will get.
