I'm 65.. last week I rode 107 miles.. first time more than 100 miles in one week. Felt pretty good about it until I go on other cycling forum (Fifty Plus (50+) - Bike Forums) for over-50 bikers.. and some of these guys bloviate about "yeah did 100 miles today.. will probably do another 100 miles tomorrow).

Yeesh! Are they just into bragging.. or are there a lot of old guys doing centuries on a regular basis?

As for me, I get a wicked crick in my neck and shoulder after about 25 miles.. plus my butt gets sore after a few hours in the saddle. I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing cause I enjoy it, not going for any records, etc.

But there must be some real cycling animals out there!

No you are not a wimp. I am lucky to get 20 miles a week mainly due to tendonitis in my wrist. These guys who are bragging about 100 miles her and there are nothing but braggers and are best avoided.

Be proud of your mileage! I am.

You would probably be surprised how far you could really ride. Sign up for an organized ride and figure to ride twice your daily ride. It is a lot of fun and you are surrounded by people just like you. (I ride 12-15 daily and 20 on the weekend and I usually sign up for the 50 miles)

Keep riding, my friend.

No, you're not a wimp. Do you feel like one?

I ride with guys in their 60's and 70's (yes, 70's) who race crits and road races. They average over 200 a week and most times their over 300 in a week.

The guy on the couch eating himself into diabetes and heart disease is a wimp. You sir, on your bike, are no wimp.

Keep at it!

It's more than I do now. I'm lucky to get 40 miles in a week, really lucky.

There's definitely people that are, most of them probably older guys who are retired. Almost no one else has time to ride 200-300 miles a week. That said if you're having neck/shoulder issues, you need to look at your posture/fit. Could be something really simple. For me it was that I wear glasses. Once got some sunglasses with clear and tinted lenses so I didn't have to hold my head up like a turtle to see the neck pain cramping went away.

Yeah, you're doing great. 100 miles a week is nothing to be laughed at. Most people complain about driving that far. Might want to check your stem height if you're getting neck/shoulder cramps. You might have the saddle to stem ratio a bit off. Also be sure and move around the bars a fair bit and keep your shoulders loose and not hunched up.

nbseer - i understand the point of your question. equipped with apparatus that makes you male, you are programmed to be competitive.

but - who cares. challenge yourself. enjoy the different departments of your life. so you are doing 20 miles a ride, and not 100....but then you can work on your piano, or painting or changing your brakes yourself, or whatever.

at 65, doing 107 miles in a week? i would NEVER have that desire (bum soreness, knees, desire to take a break for several days after 50 miles...). you're not a wimp, and you are perfectly fine....kid.

Jeez, I got tired of doing half day 56 mile workouts at Lake Shore drive many years ago. Today I'd rather workout on a bmx bike, and basketball and swimming at a fitness club. BMX is a heavy duty POWER MOVE exercise that takes a lot of SKILL, too... And I get a muscular fatigue that lasts for days... You know what?... I think BMX Freestyle is an Interval Sport, and Interval Training is the latest trend anyway.

I also got tired of road biking in BAD weather. Now I'm getting used to working out at a fitness club, especially during the rain!
