I've been biking over a bridge that connects the Bronx and Manhattan known as the Broadway Bridge (US 9). I once tried riding on the edge walkway but i had a problem with the height so I switched to the main roadway(I noticed other bikers ride there too) and it worked out well. This bridge has a light traffic flow generally speaking
I'm just curious though, the bridge sometimes opens for ships to pass through. The roadway has a metal grating and also these black things ( they probably open to lift the bridge) which resemble clasping your fingers together to crack knuckles) which have a small gap. Often I wonder if these gaps are wide enough will the bike tire slip into the gap, causing me to fall. So far it hasn't happened
It was my mom who alerted me to someone in her area who was biking across a bridge and the tire caught in something (she described it as a rough patch) and the biker was thrown or fell. Although this won't stop me from doing what i like, I am a bit concerned about those black metal things. I suppose i could just learn to get over my problem with heights and use the walkway instead but that's more of a drag
