I have read labels for a long time; nowadays, I mainly check the sodium content, and since I quit smoking, the calories-boy does that stink, considering what the-powers-that-be claim is a "serving size"!
I also noticed that the individual applesauces [like for lunches] have absolutely NO nutritional value whatsoever, unless it is a brand name that has added some vitamin C. But I wonder if it still is considered a serving of fruit, as they claim?

Reason: clarification-hopefully
I try to read labels, but don't always understand what I am looking at. Therefore, I have been getting most foods in the most natural form possible. Is this with all my food, no but I am trying very hard. I am also trying to make most of my dressings, marinades, bbq sauce from scratch but as in most cases to do this does not mean all ingredients are in their natural state when I use them.
Todays food was
Breakfast was oatmeal with raisins, cinnamon and a little nutmeg. 4 cups of coffee (organic) with lite table cream.
No lunch, I was shopping till I was brokehappily broke.
Here is the bad point for the day, I stopped at the local dairy queen and got a blizzard, strawberry cheesecake to be exact........but it was a small one.
Dinner was tossed salad with balsmetic chicken and an organic raspberry vinegerette.
I have had 2 diet cokes today, one sweet tea, and am on my 3rd glass of water. Will have to have a few more before bed, but that is all the blizzard really threw me off today.
Hi all
I do read food labels, mostly I want to know how many grams of fat.
Breakfast...yougurt and rasins
lunch...one banana
Dinner...went to the diner and had a shrimp salad wrapp with to many french fries. I drank lots of coffee today!! diet pepsi for dinner.
I'd like to know if you read food labels, and if so, what's the first thing you look for?
I rarely eat processed foods but if i do then i check for High Fructose Corn Syrup or Modified Corn Starch along with our pal Partially Hydrogenated vegetable oil.
Yes. I if it has partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in it goes back on the shelf. If it has coco butter in it it goes back on the shelf. If it has anything with a really big chemical name it goes back on the shelf. My fear is that one day the big processed food processors will figure out how to not put these chemicals on the label.
I'm really curious... what does coco butter and modified corn starch do?
Means that the Corn Starch has been altered either by chemicals or super heating it so it's not as sticky when found naturally. It can also be ''code'' for Genetically Modified which again is a no no to me as this is not found natural in nature and how will our DNA deal with it like for example Trans Fats as we're not even sure if we have yet evolved our DNA to create enzymes to break down trans fats.....
I'm really curious... what does coco butter and modified corn starch do?
I believe coco butter in food is a hydrogenated item. I actually know someone who worked in a plant that makes it and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. It might be very sticky like partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. He told me a story of someone breathing coco butter vapor during manufacturing and the guy's lungs were coated with so much of it he could barely breath. So.. think on that if you are ever having another vending machine snack.
Also my doctor told me to stay away from coco butter, so I do.
Wow! I had no idea about these two items; I'm really glad you guys shared.
And for dinner: an oriental salad. I think I'm going to break down and have an eclair. Before you start hassling me, it isn't completely ooey-gooey! It's a mild one!
