I have learned a lot- it is very rare- and hard to diagnose-as the damage shows up days later. It so tiny-these fat emboli, but I am wondering if this is why when old people break their femur- sometimes never come home.
Going into week three of coma- simple broken leg or bad tissue damage can cause FES. 80% get it- but most recover immediately via the liver filtering the fat. I guess because it is rare that there is complications, there is little said about it-

Still little change open eyes, yawns and streching- my understanding that once opens eyes no more in a coma but a non conscious -state , hopes are to get him to a semi concious well hopes are for full return of everything !
the diffuse axenoal damage or babyshake syndrome is the cause of the problems as well.

it has been 5 weeks now, he is tracking and last night was snickering at some jokes his brother was making- definitely aware of surroundings. It will take time but he seems to be coming around, every day there is something new. This fat embolism, happens 80 to 90 % of patients in all kinds of TBI and large bone fractures from football or head injuries from car accidents, etc. It is a rare thing for the fat emboli to travel to the lungs heart and brain- but can cause mini strokes, and like my grandson, deep coma. Thank God for His grace, as he seems to be making a remarkable recovery. One day at a time, but think the train has left the station.

Weekend with grandson. Eating mush foods. Drink is the water and juices, lots of laughing. He tried to speak to his uncle on FaceTime but it was silent ---ok with that -he tried on his own! Has great memory and listens to everything. Still working on rehabs that offer neuro therapy --- sigh --alot of calls . They say his case is very unique so hard to see what best, but still moving forward. He is healthy , removed the treach and they removing the feeding tube next . He eats all his food!
