The problem with the University of Minnesota's law school has nothing to do with the law school itself, but rather with its location in a state that has one of the nation's worst (highest) amounts of lawyers per capita. Minneapolis-St. Paul is also home to three other law schools. Consequently, Minnesota is filled with unemployed and underemployed-involuntarily-out-of-field law school graduates. Texas and Dallas are better in those regards. If SMU is the only law school in Dallas and if you wanted to settle in Dallas, that would be a compelling reason to choose SMU over Minnesota even though a Minnesota JD has more value on a national basis.

Of course, I can't recommend that anyone go to law school regardless of where it is located unless its one of Harvard, Yale, or Stanford, full scholarship and you can live at home, you have a BSEE (for patent law), or your father owns the largest personal injury firm in the city and has guaranteed you a job. For the overwhelming majority of law school applicants, going to law school and getting saddled with $120,000-185,000 of student loan debt that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy for the privilege of entering a heavily glutted, miserable field is disastrous.
