We just bought a house in McKinney and my husband will be commuting to the Dallas/Irving Border (somewhere off of 635). We drove the commute (75) on the weekend and it wasn't so bad, but I know that rush hour would be. When does the toll road open near the Frisco/McKinney area? Would that be any faster? Hubby assures me that he will be okay with this drive, but I am not so sure after reading some of the posts on here. If he were to go in early or leave late, would that make any difference?
Hoping we didn't make a bad decision
TIA.

Probably not what you want to hear but 635 is one of the worst roads to have to travel during rush hour. If he can work something like 6-3, it would be much, much better. I use to work 6-3 and it was a much nicer drive. I live in mckinney and drive to richardson.
75 is all messed up in Plano right now which doesn't help but they should be done with that soon.
They are working on the tollway to 380 but it's going to be a while before they get that done.

eee-gads. I'd hate to make the drive myself during rush hour. Either way you go it is going to be a lot of traffic. 75 to 635....... traffic. 121 to I35 to 635 no matter how you slice it with the tollroads....... traffic. Yuck! Let me put it this way.... you can leave McKinney and head north to Sherman and be there faster than someone can be to Richardson on 75 and you'd be going farther to drive to Sherman.

Oh, dear. Big, big difference in weekend traffic and rush hour traffic. I wonder what 75 to George Bush would be like though?

I live in Far North Dallas and wouldn't even take a job in Irving due to the commute (with the exception of Exxon - I would make the drive to work at Exxon). My son had a doctor in Las Colinas and it could take an hour to get there or come back if we were near rush hour. Never did it at rush hour. To head up to McKinney would be another 30-45 minutes, I'm guessing.

But I'm not familiar with George Bush. I don't know if that can help you. I was on 635.

Mom - someone was giving me grief (or it got deleted) when I said Frisco was closer to Oklahoma than Dallas -- yep you can get to Oklahoma faster. Having grown up with a place at Texoma, we always looked upon McKinney as 'almost halfway there'...

I agree with everyone on the board. The drive from McKinney to I635 in the Irving area will be a long drive during M-F rush hour. Its usually a 60-80 min drive with all that traffic. Have your husband come in late, and leave late to avoid the traffic, or get job closer to home. I've refused job offers in the Irving/Las Colinas area because one time, the drive during one of the morning job interviews were crazy!

LOL!!!! We always kid friends that live in Allen or McKinney that they forgot to tell us to pack a lunch that we did not know we were headed to South Oklahoma. LOL!!! In good fun of course. And I'm a Native Dallasite, lol.

Let me put it to ya this way...... Back in the early 90's around 1992-93 I was living about 2 miles from where I do know in northeast Garland and for a few months had an assignment out in Valley Ranch. Back THEN w/ no 190 and not NEAR the growth that is in the Dallas area now it took a good hour to get to and from work. Back then LBJ/635 had no HOV and the traffic on it was NOTHING like it is today. It actually MOVED! A few weeks ago hubby had to be at a customers one morning but not till like 9:30ish that is located over off Loop 12/Stemmons. He said it took about 45 minutes (he even could not believe the time he made then) and that was taking 190 to I35. I'd try in in REAL rush hour and see how it goes.

Just out of curiosity, how come he's not taking 121 to the George Bush? From the North Dallas Tollway to the 635 crossing in Los Colinas is only about 30 minutes on a good day. A good friend of ours works in McKinney ISD and travels from Carrollton in about 40 minutes every day. I would NEVER go down I75 to 635 when the cut across is so much more direct-even with a toll!

Default commute

I used to work over in that area. It is AWFUL. I quit my job and now work in Princeton

This is the route I used to take. It took me 50 mins in the morning when i left at 6:30 am. I worked 7:30 to 4:30. The drive home was much worse.
This was my route:
Eldorado to Lake Forest south to FM720 to Alma south. Go down ALma into Plano where I would take GBush Tollway over into the Las Colinas area where I would exit Valley View. My office was right at valley view/35. But if you work in Irving you can continue on GBush into 635.

Coming home I would just take 35 north to GBush to 75 north. The 75 onramp from Bush was Awful but what else could I do?

Granted this was my route 2 years ago when Alma in McKinney was just a 2 lane road.
Good luck. But I'd find a job north of McKinney. I will never work in Dallas again.

Where in Mckinney, East or West ? If West, you can take the 380 over to the North Dallas Tollway South (5 miles from the West side), then take George Bush (maybe 8-10 miles south ?). The Phase 3 extension is supposed to be finished in September, but I'd pad that date a little and push it out till Christmas. Until then, CTR36's route seems to work. I prefer Custer/Independence over Alma to go South though...

You can get from Richardson to West Mckinney in about 30-35 mins on Custer (18 miles). I've done this drive several times at 5-6pm and the time is pretty consistent.
