To echo this, there are plans for development, including more restaurants and bars planned for the Henderson/Capitol intersection. My only regret for that stretch was the Barley House relocation.

It's an astounding transformation underway all the way to Ross - which means the Henderson scene is merging into the Lower Greenville scene.

So when I said Lakewood was too family oriented I was talking about strictly the old Lakewood proper (east of Abrams/Lakewood Elementary district) the Lakewood AREA or East Dallas/Lower Greenville/MStreets/Knox-Henderson AREA are great for singles.
Uptown is evolving every day...
To me Addison is a lot of business travelers wearing golf shirts on expense accounts - completely manufactured and vacuous.

Are all the Uptown apartments $1000/mo. and up? That's a bit steep for me but I guess that's what it costs to live in such a desirable place. Any good complexes you can recommend?

Try just East of Central Expwy. Rents are usually a little cheaper on that side, but you are still very close to many districts, including the Uptown area. Bryan Place, Live Oak are worth a look if you are needing to get the price down a bit.

Try an apartment finder service. They're pretty good. They'll even tell you how to negotiate down the price of the apartment.
In Uptown, the most desirable place to be is in between the Tollway and Central. However, some good deals can be had just outside that area.

Uptown is definitely not a predominately gay community. Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs is the "gay area." However, gays are certainly accepted in the area.
You've been listening to someone from Anna, TX who says they know Dallas haven't you?

Even if you rent space in JRs you won't catch the "gay".
If you are offended by the presence of gays, I would suggest Gun Barrel City or the like because everywhere in Uptown, you will see GLBT folks.
However, the commute will be long and it certainly isn't a hip place for young singles.

Actually I have heard there is a rather popular gay bar in Gun Barrel City!
