Van Alstyne - what do you think about the area? (Dallas: hoa, home)

Hi Everyone - I am new to Texas and I am considering moving to Van Alstyne and maybe open a small retail store. What do you think about this area? Has it grown much in the last years? Where can I find more info the area and its future? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

It's out there a ways, but definitely in the growth path.

It probably needs another retail store.

I know folks who have lived out there for years and they like it. Country and small, yet they can get to McKinney, Sherman or Dallas if they need to. The people I know who live there all have a lot of land and horses. I'm not sure if the new development from Collin County has hit up there in Grayson County yet.

I go through Van Alstyne on 75 quite a bit but have not gone down the back roads. I have friends all the time going through there looking at land, so many here in Mckinney are tired of living on top of each other and want to move out that way. When the weather clears up, I plan on going out there to see what is around. I will let you know what I discover.

It has grown some but if you go east of Central Expressway, it's the same small town it has been for 100 years. I'm not sure what kind of retail you want to do, is freeway frontage important?

Yes, it's in the path of the growth. Not sure when that will arrive, depends on if McKinney is overbuilt and there is a bust.

A word of warning --- beware the Grayson County Commissioners.

My grandfather built a building in Van Alstyne to open the first Drug Store in 1900. A Drug Store is still in the same building. I remember this Laid Back little town from the time I was 5 years old. I have been there many time through the years to just drive through down town, look at the old Neathery Home and visit the Cemetary where J.M. and Georgie Neathery are burried. I have my roots in SE, TX now but I have a lot of great memories of this great little town. I vote yes if you are considering a move to Van Alstyne. Jim B. Neathery

I grew up in Van Alstyne and graduated from there. There has been massive growth in the town since I moved from there 8 years ago. This was a "town" with one red light in the entire town. There are now Burger Kings, McDonald's, New Neighborhoods with HOA's. I still think of it as home. It's been rumored that Disney Land is purchasing property or has purchased property on Hwy 75 for parking to shuttle visitors back and forth to the Park that they will soon be building about 45 minutes away. I am not certain about this; however, I have heard it many times. I definitely think there is room for retail. I just think it would depend on the type of retail that was coming in at this point and the location that is selected. I have also heard rumors that Van Alstyne will become the largest city in Grayson County. Hope this helps! I just stumbled onto this site by accident today and decided to respond to your question.
