Why would your kids not be home for Christmas?

Why not? Because of the crazy work schedules that almost everyone in my family has always had, we have never had a traditional Christmas (or Thanksgiving or Easter, for that matter). Every holiday is different but everyone has been just right for the current circumstances. Lots of people leave home on Christmas and it's not to go to grandma's house. Have you ever seen the parking lots of a casino on Christmas Day....always full!!

We have friends who have 4 children but no grandparents or other relatives - since the kids have gotten to be teens, they spend every Christmas on a cruise. I'm sure that will change later but for right now that suits them just fine.....no shopping, no cooking, no cleaning, just fun and relaxation. For several years, during Thanksgiving week our family rented a big condo at a lake that is a mid-point for most of us - we all just came and went as our work schedules allowed and visited and ate and made it our 'tradition.'

I think the media makes us have unrealistic expectations about what holidays 'should' be......I wouldn't sit at home and be depressed because the kids can't come.....get out and experience something new - maybe it will keep them from feeling guilty about not coming home, too. And just think of all the new stories you'll have to tell them when you see them again!!

I might take a trip.
Or invite someone over who doesn't have family in town - we have done this many times since neither my husband or I travel travel back to our parents' at Xmas time.

A cabin in the woods with a wee tree and decorations, hot grog of your choice & good music! Or New Orleans or Natchitoches, LA! Enjoy yourself!

I would go and visit them! Or if I felt I needed to get away and visiting them isn't an option, I would go somewhere warm.

My mom and sister came to visit me at Xmas one year when I couldn't get away from a job I had just started. They drove from Michigan to Florida.

A ski trip if you're into it? A cruise sounds very nice too.
