LOL, that may be it.....however, I do have sons who were teens then, and they didn't use it....I think it was more of a beach resident term......you know, the surfer types and surfer wannabes.

I think it was probably invented by one of those silly 80's movies like Valley Girl, and never used much by "real" people. In the 80's my friends and I might say something was "grody to the max...like totally gag me with a spoon!" but we'd collapse into giggles afterwards because it was so funny to us that anybody would think Californians really spoke like that.

That's the stereotype, though. It amuses us that Californians seem to think that we all carry guns and vote Republican.

I know people from Cali that subscribe to that stereotype, you're right.
I've come to see all this ridiculous California vs. Texas bashing as akin to sibling rivalry. Both are in the top 3 states in population and geographical size. Both have many proud citizens and traditions. This makes many people spend a lot of time comparing the states and develop an unproductive "us vs. them" mentality. IMHO, pride in your own home is much better served without a side order of denigration of somebody else's.
When I moved here, I thought the denigration was only on one side - the Texas side. It pains me to say that on my trip back to southern Cal over Christmas, I heard several comments from family and friends that proved that people from both states are taking this rivalry seriously. I found it as annoying in California as it is in Texas.
Darn.. I feel like quoting Rodney King again... Cain't we all just get along?

Sure, if Californians who move here would embrace the culture and stop comparing it to California instead of always talking it down, being condescending to us, and in general being giant pains in the butt. I know not all of you are like that, but enough of you are.
I don't have a high opinion of California or Californians, but I don't live there and have no plans to ever live there.

Funny how this turned into Californians. I guess stuck-up, materialistic, and snobbish = ex-Californians in Dallas?

I believe the major difference on this subject is that we Texans AREN'T the ones moving to California... it's the Californians that are choosing to relocate to Texas... in droves... and then have the audacity to berate it and its' people!
If California was so great... and we do hear this over and over... then why is everyone leaving and coming here? Do we want Texas to be like California? Absolutely not... no way, no how... nada... not in anyway whatsoever! This is our home. As said before, embrace the culture... or don't come... it's a pretty simple concept! We're sick and tired of hearing the silly complaints at every turn, i.e, how expensive it is here (yet they don't even work?), how bad the traffic is (how no one here uses their turn signals), how rotten the weather is here (tornadoes, floods, heat, etc.), how high the property taxes are... & on & on & on! Hello??? Did you not do your homework before you moved or were you just blinded by the cash-cow dollar signs on how much you'd make on selling your house there and how cheaply you could get one here? As the saying goes, "If you're looking for a free ride... it ain't here"!
And, just to put those that have moved into the area at ease that have embraced and appreciated the difference in the areas, I am not referring to everyone that has moved here... just those continually whining and complaining. Get over it already! Or, go back home!
