Hmmm I just tried to check out that site, and I get "address not valid", I guess no-one really wants Dallas to "stay plastic".

Yes, that's it! I was trying to think of one of those "dumb" movies but drew a blank. I used to say gag me too, but as a joke about the movies.
It's crazy to think people really believe those things about Californians.....that isn't to say some aren't like that, but the majority are not. The stupid reality shows, which are NOT normal people, shed a bad light on the good people.
I remember moving from So Cal in my junior year of high school, to a small town in Virginia. I couldn't believe the wild misconceptions they had about where I'd moved from, and "assumed" my family and myself were like that.

I've come to see all this ridiculous California vs. Texas bashing as akin to sibling rivalry. Both are in the top 3 states in population and geographical size. Both have many proud citizens and traditions. This makes many people spend a lot of time comparing the states and develop an unproductive "us vs. them" mentality. IMHO, pride in your own home is much better served without a side order of denigration of somebody else's.
When I moved here, I thought the denigration was only on one side - the Texas side. It pains me to say that on my trip back to southern Cal over Christmas, I heard several comments from family and friends that proved that people from both states are taking this rivalry seriously. I found it as annoying in California as it is in Texas.
Darn.. I feel like quoting Rodney King again... Cain't we all just get along?

Very well said, Debsi.

I can only imagine!
Someone in VA started circulating that my dad had been a semi-pro boxer in CA, because he had a good build I assume - not even muscle bound though! Then there were tons of assumptions about me, because my dresses were much shorter than the below the knee pleated skirts they were wearing, etc....someone started saying my step-mother was a full blown professional model....lol I mean sheesh, get to know people!

LOL!! We got asked on a visit to So. Cal in the 80's if we knew JR. My answer, "Sure do, he is our next door neighbor". The chick and everyone else BELIEVED IT! They were even highly impressed. We just stood there kind of dumb struck. More questions were:
"Do you go to school?"
No, we don't have schools in Texas.
"Do you ride a horse to school?"
Yep, it has 250 horses
"Are there horses all over the streets?"
Um, as in Ford Mustangs. Yes.
"Can you buy stuff at a store?"
A what
"Does everyone have an oil well?'
Honey, how do you think I can afford to travel
Some of the questions were unreal and we found it rather amusing that people actually thought this stuff was real. Had the same experience in Florida during spring break when we met some guys from Florida and the northeast. These people were amazed that we lived in REAL houses on real streets and drove real cars.

Heh...and you're complaining about that?
How would you feel if people asked you if you attended school past the age of 12? Or...if you were capable of reading the classics of literature?

LOL That's hilarious! The misconceptions about various parts of our country are amazing, aren't they?

Well yes, I did complain about it.....it was offensive and hurt my feelings. They were down right cruel about my clothing, and made some really crude remarks. I wasn't hanging out all over either; my clothes were conservative by CA standards, I couldn't just run out and buy a whole new wardrobe because I moved.
I wouldn't have liked the questions they asked you either. Brits do have a reputation of looking down their noses at Americans in general.
