No, JR Ewing did not live in Dallas. He did not live anywhere, he was a fictional character in a television show out of California. Dallas is not responsible for the content of West Coast television.
No, I don't think the character was portrayed as "materialistic". He may have been a power-mad sociopath, and malevolent, which is an entirely different characterization.

Stuck-up means that your social behavior is so inappropriate people treat you as an inferior.
Materialistic means you can't handle your finances and you resent people who can.
Snobbish means that people recognize you for a jerk at first glance, and don't need to spend time to get to know you before they reject you.

That's very funny and a great way to look at it!

My goodness, touchy. No, Dallas isn't responsible for garbage from the west coast as Dallas is a sin-free city. As I said, his character was other adjectives and in my opinion, materialistic was one of them. Your description of materialistic does not concur with mine nor do your other two, but that doesn't matter as everyone has different views about life and living it. By the way, there really are people like him even though he was just "pretend" but everyone knows that, so I'm not saying anything new.
I so agree about the movie/TV industry. It's getting worse and worse every year but for some reason, the public thrives on sex, violence, and disgusting language. California is truly ruining this nation, but the sad part is that people everywhere are buying into it. It truly is crazy.

If you're going to blame anyone, blame the executives in Hollywood that put out the stuff they do, not the entire state of California. As a former resident of California, I take exception to someone pigeonholing an entire state of 36 million people. You wouldn't like it if someone said something derogatory about Texas like that.

Agreed.
I used to live in California myself, and there are so many different ways of life in California that it's not fair to lump all of the state's people into one category, even if that category were complimentary.
In fact, the differences in way of life between the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California are so extreme that you'd be hard pressed to fit them into the same country, let alone the same state. The cultural divide between the Bay Area and Sacramento, 100 miles to the east, are not as pronounced, but still very visible.
Besides, the myths perpetuated by the Hollywood entertainment industry are a world unto its own... that Hollywood society seems like it comes from another planet.

Well, the purpose of this thread is to define the word "materialistic". What do you mean by it?
I think Ambrose Bierce defined a cynic as someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. Perhaps a materialist is someone who appreciates the value of everything but is unconcerned as to price. Sounds like a pretty comfy personal circumstance to be in, just enjoying the things money can buy without having to worry about the cost. If only I could afford that.
The word "materialism" has a pretty precise definition in philosophy... it means the opposite of idealism. It may be a point of view that accepts the world as it is, rather than the world he would like it to be. That definition leaves no room for scorn of others, an individual sense of moral superiority, or any other aberration of personality or character that I can think of.
In my experience, people who deride others as "materialistic" belong to a social element I need to avoid, as they are trying to elevate their own sense of self-importance by finding fault in others. If you find fault in the character of JR Ewing, perhaps I can see an exception in that case, but I would question the appropriateness of the term.
