grindin, I was being facetious, not the proper thing to do I know. I am from southern California and thought the dig about Hollywood portraying J.R. as a fictional character representing Dallas was a riot. I was being a smart alec because I can hardly believe how defensive people are of Texas.
I certainly don't blame anyone for the trash on TV and in the movies, and it doesn't matter where it originates anyway. The real deal is the people in every state who live by that junk. I don't partake in it although I did watch "Dallas" once in a while many years ago when I still lived in CA but I think we will all agree, things are much worse now with the internet, etc.
I love California and was just being a brat with my silly comments. I truly thought people would "read" the sarcasm in my post. I would be pretty naive to really think Dallas was a sin-free city.
Hey, I'll always be a Californian and in spite of what many think, that's not a bad thing to be.

In fact, the differences in way of life between the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California are so extreme that you'd be hard pressed to fit them into the same country, let alone the same state. The cultural divide between the Bay Area and Sacramento, 100 miles to the east, are not as pronounced, but still very visible.
Besides, the myths perpetuated by the Hollywood entertainment industry are a world unto its own... that Hollywood society seems like it comes from another planet.

I explained to the other poster the method to my madness. I love California.
And you brought up, "Dallas is not responsible for the content of West Coast television." I beg to differ because everyone anywhere who indulges in the garbage is responsible.

To me, to be materialistic is to be more concerned with material things than with decent values, people, and anything else that is important. Things are not important.
Here is a true story that happened in Highland Park.
husband owned Mercedes
wife was driving Mercedes
wife was involved in auto accident and killed
First thing out of husband's mouth when he found out about the accident was, "How is the car?" (It was totalled). The VERY next day, he went out and bought a new Mercedes.
So that's what materialistic means to me.

Seems like a pretty extreme example to me. It's a case of a man who was very, very hostile to his wife. It had nothing to do with a car.

Yes, I agree. That story has nothing to do with a car or materialism.

Well, I guess one could look at it that way, but I very much doubt that was the case. It had everything to do with the car, a status symbol to him. Even if what you say were true, he could have "faked" it for the sake of those who liked his wife. It is extreme, but it happens, and it's very sad. Why would anyone stay married to someone which he or she felt hostility? No, the guy was a materialistic jerk.

That is hysterical, but everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. A story about a car being replaced before a woman is even buried is self-explanatory that it has everything to do with a car and me, me, me.

Gotcha! I'm one of the most sarcastic people out there, and here I am not "getting" someone else's sarcasm! LOL, silly me...I'm the main one harping on others for not 'getting' me.
But I understand what you're saying. I lived in San Diego for 11 years, and I'd never trade those years for the world, but life goes on. What's really weird is, when I go back to Cali to visit, I don't feel at "home" there anymore.
I live in Atlanta now, and a lot of the criticisms about Dallas could just as easily apply here, because there is a large subset of folks that are trying to "keep up with the Joneses," not to mention all the wannabe "celebrities" around here because the music industry is so big here. Whenever I hear someone claim they're a 'producer' or a 'rapper', I'm like, "yeah, what restaurant are you working at?" Not to disrespect anyone's hustle, but there are so many perpetrators around here, I tend to get blase about it...

CC having observed those residents at close quarters, I have no doubt about the authenticity of your story.

CC, I would query you about the story if you actually were a witness, but since you were not, the story is just an urban legend. In a normal marital relationship, a man would be concerned about a physical threat to his wife's safety. That was obviously not a normal relationship. At any rate, one isolated incident is meaningless.
Personally, I see nothing wrong in aspiring for a more prosperous lifestyle, better housing, better food, better entertainment, the wherewithal to travel, etc, enough of a financial cushion to avoid the occasional emergencies that happen to all of us. I do see a moral downside in criticizing other people for their alleged moral inferiority. People who criticize others are almost always trying to divert attention from their own shortcomings.
This is what is happening. In Southern coastal California, people are so economically stressed by their inferior economy that they come up with rationalizations to explain away the obvious shortages and privations they suffer. In Texas, every class of society is relatively more affluent, consumes a better marketbasket of goods and services. This is because Texas as a society does not have the social and ideological delusions and stupidities that hamstring an economy. That is why California has net out-migration... especially from the more prosperous classes that are the hardest hit. People who can afford it want to escape the California economy for the promise of a better life.
You don't think California makes stupid economic decisions that retard its economy? Remember how the state set up electricity policy that resulted in rolling power blackouts all over the state due to power shortages? That usually happens in third world countries. It doesn't happen in Texas, however. Actually, there are many other examples of how California as a society is economically self-destructive and dysfunctional.
