No, I was not a witness. The story was told to me by a friend who lived near this couple in HP. This was back in the 80s and if you knew my friend, you would believe it. People who still live in HP might even remember the incident.
True, it isn't a normal relationship and probably amounts to a low percent of such. Nevertheless, it just depicts a lover of the secular world. None of us will really ever know how many like him are out there. What about that fool who lived up there (might have been Highland Park too but if not, right near it) who stabbed his wife to death in front of his children? Another McMansion story that was a total tragedy.
That's only two; are there more? You bet there are.
I know, people with no money are just as nuts. Many in this world are in very sad shape mentally.

I certainly don't speak for all of Lakewood - no monolith of materialism here - but I can tell some of you have never been around the people I described. I lived for four years on the SMU campus and eight years in Knox Henderson - and I went to church with and have known some of these people all my 50 years. So it is not an uniformed opinion. And I think you can find a few people who will agree with me.
Yes, there are a few nice ones - and I think they would tell you that envy is rampant even there...
And I still run into some of these types -- they have a little game. They will ask you 'qualifying questions' in order to place you somewhere below their station -- just wait it will happen to you some day.

But I understand what you're saying. I lived in San Diego for 11 years, and I'd never trade those years for the world, but life goes on. What's really weird is, when I go back to Cali to visit, I don't feel at "home" there anymore.
I live in Atlanta now, and a lot of the criticisms about Dallas could just as easily apply here, because there is a large subset of folks that are trying to "keep up with the Joneses," not to mention all the wannabe "celebrities" around here because the music industry is so big here. Whenever I hear someone claim they're a 'producer' or a 'rapper', I'm like, "yeah, what restaurant are you working at?" Not to disrespect anyone's hustle, but there are so many perpetrators around here, I tend to get blase about it...
|
Thanks! I probably wouldn't feel at home in CA anymore either, but sometimes I wish I never left. It's not the same today as it used to be but then again, I guess no place is after so many years have gone by.
Yes, the keeping up with the Jones is pitiful. I like living in my own little world not worrying about what dress I wear to church or work, how old my car is, not being totally up-to-date with technology, and the list goes on. If I had to live like that, I'd really be crazy, crazier than I already am. I adore the simple things in life and the simpler my life is, the better.

And so is the population of Lakewood.
But again, it's none of your business to correct the moral faults of others.
Your sole perogative is to correct your own.

The funny thing is, people who view themselves lower on the rung are just as apt to be contemptful of people who are different (only this time "higher" on the rung). They too have their own qualifying questions, classifications, etc. In my 20's I traveled in working class circles (drive a freight delivery route and unloaded and loaded freight on to planes in San Diego for a living) before I went back to college. It's interesting to me as I have been in different stations of life how people are very much the same when it comes to envy, spite and being overly judgemental. The Park Cities do not have a corner on the market when it comes to unfairly judging others, it is simply more politically correct to point fingers at folks who have money than it is to point at folks who don't. It's been my own experience that the meanest, most closed minded and most judgement people have been in cities/neigborhoods that have considered themselves the most "progressive" and "open minded." Spend a week in Berkeley, CA and you will know what I mean.
As the saying goes, "your mileage may vary."

Excellent point. You will find a mix of people in every element of society. Some will be moral and wise, some will be dishonest and stupid, and the rest will be somewhere in between.
By the way, if you complain that the people around you are of a low moral character, the chances are that you are no different. They say that you may judge people by the company they keep... or find themselves in.
P. S. ... you will find a greater mix of ideological diversity and respect for the views of others in Dallas than in the SF Bay Area.

What does stabbing your wife to death have to do with wealth or a materialistic attitude? It seems like a crime of passion, not of greed.
Insurance fraud? I don't think so. Not if the beneficiary murders the insured. Unless you make it look like an accident, as in the film "Double Indemnity".
I don't believe you've properly defined materialism, or explained what it is. Whatever it may be, it is not a matter of assault with intent to kill.

I was thinking about that earlier, like why in the world did I mention that as it was totally off topic? My apologies as it doesn't have anything to do with materialism. I guess I had another senior moment, too many of them lately. Ugh!!
In an earlier post though, I did define materialism as I see it, but grant it, the post about the murder had nothing to do with it.
