Default Moving from Miami to Dallas

Well first to Houston but I would like to have some white winters (snow) and I know it snows in Dallas.

It's me and my wife. We are not party animals but do like to go out day and night. Like to eat out. Lounges. Shop. Etc.

My budget is 1000. I now pay 1050 in Miami beach for a one bedroom which sucks ass but hey that's Miami for ya. I hear I can get more bang for my buck in Texas.

I was looking at the Monecito. (luxury apt building near the galleria). Look very nice. I would like to live near the city but not the ghetto either.

My wife works in the law field
(paralegal and law firms etc etc)
And for me it's not important I am extremely resourceful. I just wanna make sure my wife feels safe and comfy.

Basically to sum up I would like to know what are good areas to rent an apt with a $1000 budget and like mild night life (lounges, movie theatres, restaurants, dog parks etc etc.) not in the slums but near the galleria and a clean area .

Thanks again guys!!!!

It does NOT snow "a lot" anywhere near Dallas. Last winter was the most snow the area had seen in 70 or 80 years when we got a few inches on Christmas and about a foot in February.

A "normal" winter is maybe an inch dusting of snow once and possibly an ice storm, which does nothing but make the streets a nightmare since no one can drive on ice.

If snow/ authentic winter is in your Top 5 "must haves" list, keep looking north. Oklahoma City, Omaha, Kansas City, etc- there you will see snow every year. Here, it's EXTREMELY UNLIKELY.

If your wife is a legal assistant, I would certainly suggest Uptown and Turtle Creek. Ninety percent of the law firms are uptown and downtown. The other 10 percent located outside of that area are not very well regarded. Dallas' law firms are very snobby on the location of the office. There are a few exceptions to this -- but very few.

Dallas' urban areas are remarkably clean compared to other large cities. So don't be afraid of the center of the city. In fact, the area east of the the Galleria wouldn't be nearly as safe or nice as Uptown or Downtown. Downtown and Uptown are miles away from ghetto. It doesn't compare to the seediness of Miami's urban areas at all.

Mansfield is a long drive to the Galleria area and has only chain restaurants and stores; no nightlife. It does have a nice golf course if you are a golfer. Housing prices are good but are offset by very high property taxes. If you like bigger houses like you see online in Mansfield and need closer to the Galleria, look at Carrollton. There are also many nice condos and apartments in Addison, which is very very close to Galleria. Look for rentals on Realtor.com

Yea I heard Addison is good for young couples. Is it hip or outgoing?

What's all this "it doesn't snow it Texas" comments? I have friends in Dallas that say it snows every winter. Plus I seen tons of videos of lots of snow in Dallas. Oh well.

Uptown? Sounds interesting. Yea I mean i don't scare easily when it comes to crime. Hell here in my own "luxury rentals" apt in Miami beach I have the cops here all the time. But I just don't wanna be near the hoodlums. Grew up with them. Won't miss them.

What u guys think about the Monecito on the galleria?

It does snow in Texas every winter if you're in the panhandle or West Texas. Dallas is in neither place. Your friends must not have been in Dallas for very many winters. This past winter was an abberation, not the norm. Dallas is just as likely, if not more likely, to see NO snow in the winter as it is to see even one day of snow. Even when we do get snow, it usually melts within a day or two.

That's good enough for me! Lol
Keep in mind all I know is Miami beach. Heat and humid. Even alittle snow will be life changing for me. So west Texas snows more? That's..... weird. I guess the west is colder? Hmm.

Your friends are either lying to you, saying that last year's winter was normal, or your friends actually live in Dallas, PA not Dallas, TX.

We did get snow last year. It was NOT NORMAL.....here is a headline from February 12, 2010 "Once-in-lifetime snow for Dallas and all of north Texas". You can read all about the 12" of snow we got- which broke the 1964 (46 years ago) record-->
Once-in-lifetime snow for Dallas and all of north Texas - Dallas Weather | Examiner.com

Exceprt from wikipedia article about Dallas' climate....it has more in common than Miami than you would guess-->
"Dallas has a humid subtropical climate... bringing temperatures well over 100 °F (38 °C) at times and heat-humidity indexes soaring to as high as 117 °F (47 °C)....the north central Texas region where Dallas is located is one of the hottest in the United States during the summer months, usually trailing only the Mojave Desert basin of Arizona, southern Nevada, and southeasternCalifornia.

Winters in Dallas are generally mild, with normal daytime highs ranging from 55 °F (13 °C) to 70 °F (21 °C) and normal nighttime lows falling in between 30 °F (−1 °C) and 45 °F (7 °C). A day with clear, sunny skies, a high of 63 °F (17 °C), and a low of 36 °F (2 °C) would thus be a very typical one during the winter.

Snow accumulation is usually seen in the city at least once every winter, and snowfall generally occurs 2–3 days out of the year for an annual average of 2.5 inches."

I found these trusty little maps on City-Data.com.
Here is a map showing average snowfall in Dallas, TX....as you can see the average is about 1" in January, 1" in February, and 1/2" in December- barely a dusting and hardly enough to even make a 6" tall snowman.

Compare this to Lubbock, TX (West TX Panhandale Region) which does get regular snowfall each year, averaging around 1 foot per winter.....still well below the US average, but high for Texas.

We're not yanking your chain here.....we're trying to tell you the FACTS about the climate in Dallas.

I would hate for you to think you were moving to some place with a "real winter" because that, my friend, isn't going to happen.
