Been in CA my entire life and considering a move to the Dallas area for lower cost of living and a better sense of community. Looking for suggestions for the best area to live. Have two small boys so school is #1. Also looking for nearby restaurants, parks, etc. Looking to spend between 500k and 650k. In sales and work from home so no commute to worry about.
Seems like Fairview and Allen are good areas for families. Also just saw Coppell and Flower Mound rated high for their public school system.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions!!

There is no "best" area to live in- it depends on your lifestyle, what kind of home you want, etc.

If you are focused on new/newer homes and have little desire to get into the city on a regular basis for arts/ pro sports/ entertainment/ dining out/nightlife, the following burbs have good schools & are a fairly safe real estate bet for your budget:
Plano
Coppell
Southake
Colleyville
Allen
Flower Mound

They are all a little different- lots are bigger in some areas than others; some school districts have "mega schools" by design with 1,400 students in a senior class, some school districts have small schools with 400-500 students in a senior class; different builders & home styles; some burbs have cute "main street" areas, other burbs just have strip mall after strip mall.

How do you define "better sense of community?" Where will you be working or commuting to on a regular basis? Do your kids have special interests that might be factored into your community decision?

As far as "community" I guess I mean a place where neighbors all know each other and their kids all play together. Maybe block parties for 4th of July. Things like that. No commute to contend with as I'll be working from home. The kids are into playing sports so little league, football, anything to keep them active.
How can I find out which schools are "mega" schools? I don't think I like the sound of that.

I like Highland Village, which is in Lewisville Schools and is perched around the lake; great community feel and wonderful walking trails:

Real estate at 3404 Wimbledon Highland Village TX - Property Details - MLS #11513183 - Realtor.com®

Also I like Flower Mound and Trophy Club. I wouldn't suggest these communities for commuters to Dallas, but since not a consideration they are all family oriented and offer great schools and great home values.

What about Deerfield or Deerfield North in Plano. Deerfield Homeowners Association - Welcome To Deerfield! I am 4 blocks away from them and they have a good feel, great holiday spirit (an institution really) and great schools.

That is one of the "mega" school areas though. If the large mega schools are scaring them then anything in the Plano ISD is out.

Default Moved from CA to Little Elm

My husband and I moved from So Cal 3 years ago to be near our kids and grand babies and love it here. What do we love? Just about everything - considerably less traffic, friendly people, a great place to raise kids, and reasonably priced houses. If you would like information on schools in the areas you are considering, check out this link: GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community
Good luck!

We moved here from OC, CA in 2006. We found Southlake to be the best in school program (you're a Dragon from Grade 1 till ya graduate). Also the split High School (9/10 in one, and 11/12 in the other). We found the community feeling doesn't come from knowing your street neighbors (it's tough), but more getting to know your school kids parents via sports and school activities.
