We are returning to the DFW area after a two year absence and want to live close to Irving for commuting purposes, but I am concerned about DFW flight patterns.
I can't find anything online. Any information or links would be helpful. Thanks!
Anything near the airport will be in the flight patterns at one time or another, depending on the "weather patterns" of the season. Lived in DFW area for 16+ years. Sometimes we had to stop conversation in our living room while planes flew overhead, the noise was that loud on occasion (not often, but occasional). All the suburbs along that mid-line north-south between Dallas-Ft.Worth get their share of air traffic noise. It's just life in the DFW area and everybody just adapts - after a while it's like most anything else - it's just a day in the life.
Not necessarily... we're in Grapevine (right on Main Street), and the planes NEVER fly directly over us. The runways point up 114 and 121, so if a plane flew over downtown Grapevine, it would be really off-course! We do sometimes get airport noise, but it's never been bad enough to disrupt conversatons.
Areas to avoid: Southlake, Lewisville, and Grand Prairie.
Southlake N of 114 and Grapevine N of 114 are bad--we live in Bedford west of DFW and we have light noise--mainly on takeoff when wind is from certain direction but houses on E side of 121 around Euless have more noise because they are closer to the arrival/departure zones...
I don't know that Irving around Las Colinas would have that much noise--I worked in Las Colinas several years ago and don't remember really any big-time noise from planes..
I lived in Irving for 6 years, off 183 and 161 (before it becomes the Bush), directly under the path to one of the runways. The apartment complex I lived in had put soundproofing on the ceilings and replaced doors and windows, and the noise really wasn't bad with the place shut up. Quite different if the windows were open, but when does that happen?
It seems to me that the majority of the flights come in either from the north or south, and that once you got a couple of miles from the airport, it wasn't noticeable anyway. Probably depends on how sensitive to noise you are.
You're going to get the heaviest traffic right around rush hour (business travelers), so check out prospective neighborhoods around that time. You can see the planes lined up in the sky around 5, so if it doesn't bother you then, it won't ever.
weather has lot to do with airplane noise--heavy, overcast clouds make noise stay in and makes it more noticeable....the wind has to do with which runways are used so some days with wind from one direction are fine and when the wind changes (which it does in DFW) noise changes...
we looked at nice home in development in Southlake n of 114 by the lake called Lonesome Dove and house had a great backyard and pool--DH said that the planes' noise would be too intrusive but think that is something that you really do get used to after a while...
I grew up just across a road from railroad track with plenty of trains--night and day--we just filtered them out for the most part--when I would come back to visit as adult, it would be lot more noticible to me than when I lived there full time...
One thing you notice as well if you live under the flight path--sometimes planes have problems and have to dump their extra fuel--you can smell it...
On the north side of DFW you're talking about pretty much west Coppell, Flower Mound, Grapevine and east Southlake on the approaches and departures that would cause any noise at all. Beyond that, there are several different long distance approaches, I think pretty much anywhere you live in DFW you're gonna have some slight jet noises, but any major noise would be restricted to what I just mentioned and Grand Prarie/Arlington on the south side, maybe Mansfield, but thats just a guess.
Re DFW noise, I found this site which was an EPA funded study of DFW noise abatement. It has all the data you were looking for. I'm considering moving to the area as well. It will influence where I buy.
