I will be relocating back to Texas after my son graduates from high school in June in San Diego. I previously lived in Austin and had an easy time getting my previous position with the State there. Of course, that was back in 2007 before the recession. I was going to move back to Texas in 2009, except in the Arlington area. Again, I had a quick response to my job search and was able to secure a job quickly. I had to decline the offer due to the hardship it would of placed on my son transferring schools to a different state. So, I stayed in California and am ready to get back to Texas.

Can any of you give a good time table of when I should start to submit applications? I don't want to apply prematurely and get interviews and offers then am unable to leave at that time. I will aim to return to government employment with the State, but will also look at county and federal positions. I work in Social Services. Please advise.

Federal employment process can take up to 6 months, so start applying to those positions now!

Private sector employment processes move much more quickly. Honestly, I wouldn't apply to those until you are already here. Many times, the company will call for interviews a couple of days out. A local address on those applications will also help.

people--read some TX newspapers online and see what is going to happen to employees of the state of TX as soon as the new budget goes into effect--end of Feb probably--
LAYOFFS--in the thousands are anticipated and layoffs in EVERY dept are likely to meet a budget deficit in the millions...

You meant BILLIONS, correct? I wouldn't be surprised to see huge public sector layoffs (if well chosen, this isn't necessarily a bad thing) given the conservative nature of those in power.

It's going to be a rough stretch. If TX is having budget problems, imagine hwo bad it is going to be in states that were less careful with their finances (such as California, where the OP is moving from).

Not trying to be mean, but my question was not about the budget and economy in Texas. I am well aware of what is going on. My question is: Can any of you give a good time table of when I should start to submit applications? I don't want to apply prematurely and get interviews and offers then am unable to leave at that time. I will aim to return to government employment with the State, but will also look at county and federal positions. I work in Social Services. Please advise.

That's it. I am not asking about finding a job. I thought some of you would be knowledgeable about a window for job searching. I guess not.
