I'm moving out to Dallas in the fall and will be working downtown. I have never lived in the city before and am trying to figure out the traffic situation.

Is traffic noticeably worse going up the 75 as opposed to the 35? How does the toll compare? What are commute times like to/from downtown and Coppell, East Richardson (Breckenridge Park), and Plano off the toll. I will likely leave for work around 7:30 and return home 6/6:30.

I am married with a young family and looking to keep my commute under 30-35 minutes, but still have exceptional elementary schools and nice square footage.

Thanks for any help.

if you leave at 7:30am you should be able to avoid the bulk or rush hour traffic. Things start to pile up around 8-8:15. You could make it from Breckenridge Park to downtown Dallas via 75 in about a half hour if traffic isn't bad, and there are no accidents. If traffic is bad, you could take an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

You say you are considering Plano and taking the tollway, I assume you mean the Dallas North Tollway. That would take more then 30 minutes even in light traffic simply because of the distance. The tollway runs through the part of Plano farthest from downtown Dallas.

Not sure about Coppell, but I am assuming it wouldn't be too bad as Coppell isn't as densely populated, and traffic is lighter. You would have to tangle with people on their way to and from the airport.

My preference is 75, then the Dallas North Tollway and then 35. Hwy 75 aka Central Expressway went through a decade or so of renovation and expansion between Richardson and downtown and, to me, now is fabulous. I can just fly down it unless there is an accident.

Dallas North Tollway is a racetrack. If there's no accident you better be prepared to travel 75-85 mph. If there's an accident you have fewer places to bail out. When it's good, though, it's great. I can only assume it will get more and more congested though as it is the way Frisco area folks gets to downtown and growth in Frisco, Little Elm, Prosper has grown a lot. Plus paying tolls every day adds up.

I used to commute in on 35 when I lived in Denton and worked near SMU. This was almost 20 years ago and it was a tense ride. To me it is the most congested. The folks I know coming from that direction towards Dallas don't take 35. I'm not sure what they are going...114 maybe, but they are not on 35.

I live in Far North Dallas and I can actually come and go to downtown on surface roads if I need to - Preston Road, Hillcrest to Abbott to Turtle Creek, or Inwood Road.

I'm not sure if you would consider the option but there is a light rail system that does connect Plano and downtown Dallas. In case you want to check it out:

DART.org - Dallas Area Rapid Transit

Please don't call highways with "the __(the number)__" Call them by just the number or the actual name.
75= North Central
Dallas North tollway= the tollway, the dallas north autobahn
35= RL Thorton

Live in Lakewood and you can be there in 10 minutes or less - no freeways.

See http://www.city-data.com/forum/dalla...-lakewood.html or search "Lakewood" "M Streets" "East Dallas" "Stonewall Jackson" "Lakewood Elementary" "Woodrow Wilson High School" etc..

There is no way that the Tollway is 75-85 in rush hour from 635 into downtown, or in the other direction, during 7:30-8:45. More like 40.

Ditto with 75 within 635 to downtown. It's now at least 15 minutes longer SB since the left lane was closed for 2 years -- from Knox-Henderson to downtown -- last month.

Once you get past what's left of the Wycliff toll plaza, the Tollway northbound does, in deed run 75 - 85 during the morning rush hour. It does slow down for the major interchanges of 635, PGBT and 121, but picks back up once the merging is done. In the eveings heading south you can run 70+ down to Addison and 50 + down to about Northwest Hwy.

But that is going against the majority of the traffic.
