Do ya'll really want me to list all the reasons why Rowlett is a "con" and not a "pro"? I can if you would like and I know I am not alone at all in the cons for that area.

The bridge bugs start getting bad in late summer, and are probably worst in the fall, and only after dark. Cold weather kills them out. I live about 2 blocks from the "bridge" in question, which is the one that connects Rowlett to Rockwall (SH 66/Lakeview Parkway). They also get in our house, but that's what you get by living next to the lake.

Oh....don't get me wrong...I would LOVE a historic/older home with character. I am a student of architecture and nothing moves me more than great residential architecture! A) this early in our careers, we can't afford the "Park Cities" type of neighborhoods, and B) the guy on the mortgage with me wants "new". =) I do feel it would be nice to raise kids, at least elementary age, in a developed community, though. Im a pretty rockin' interior designer, so I can make any place I live- no matter how big or small, pretty awesome. Would love a smaller home, close to the city with tons of architectural character. Love those neighborhoods to pieces...even the ones out here in CA.

There's also Sache -- new houses, Garland schools, no over the lake drive.

Years ago, as a young family, it was important to us that we had a house with many amenities and a pretty homogenious (economically, not in terms of diversity) community. That is who we were. Driving into Dallas was not a priority (altho I did commute). Mansfield worked nicely for us during those years. We had a large house with all the bells and whistles in a very upscale community. Kids could ride bikes all over and never wander into a blighted area. And so I am always mindful of what the OP is looking for. Many contributors have other viewpoints and they value the legacy of older neighborhoods and proximity to Dallas. They have a distain for new areas. I have come around and also have a great appreciation for old inner circle communities. If it were me doing this search today, I would be looking in Lakewood or Richardson. But, the OP wants the dream many young families share. Resale would be better in the inner circle communities. But bells and whistles -- space, big closets, master baths with spa features, dream kitchens, etc. -- would not be there......

Yes, Sachse is a great area as well.

I live in Rockwall, just south of I30 and I work in downtown Garland. Dislike driving the I30 bridge, so I go thru Rockwall and drive SH 66. It's a nice commute - no 18-wheelers and I can do all my errands enroute if I want since there are so many places to stop.
It takes 35 minutes for me to get from my front door to my work desk. For someone further south (Heath), it'd take longer.
Coming home takes a few minutes more right now, due to the current roadwork.
My work hours enable me to avoid commuting during school begin-and-end hours, which can add time.

It's a buyers' market in Rockwall. There are many houses in a wide range of prices. Not everyone lives in a $350k+ house and there's no need to do so, to feel accepted and comfortable here.

edit: I forgot to answer your original question. The only thing I dislike about living here is the right-wing conservative political atmosphere, but that's something you'll find in most communities surrounding DFW. Other than that, it's grand. I moved here right after getting married 30+ years ago and raised my children here.

Alright, thanks for the info on the right-wing conservative atmosphere; I'll have to put it on my list.

Please do tell where the left-wing socialist/liberal havens are, so I can cross them off entirely!
