We are moving to Flower Mound from Michigan in the next three weeks. Just bought a home in Wellington. We have four children, aged 9 - 17. Have to say we were pleased with what we saw of the Metro Plex--even our oldest who will be enterring 12th grade is excited. We found Flower Mound, Grapevine, and surrounding areas much to our liking.

Question: What activities/events do you suggest for a family that enjoys sports (participating and spectating), museums, history, and the outdoors? We want to provide our children with a crash course on living in and enjoying Texas in the two weeks before schools starts.

The World Aquarium in downtown Dallas is way cool. You could go to Six Flags and/or Hurricane Harbor in Arlington or a smaller water park is NRH2O in North Richland Hills. You could drive up to Turner Falls in Oklahoma and swim in the big waterfall. Fort Worth has a nice zoo. Dallas has a zoo, too, not as good as Ft. Worth, but okay. I don't know what to tell you about sports. Frisco is home to some minor league sports, but I'm not sure what. Grapevine Mills mall has an indoor skateboard place if you have any skateboarders in your family. Austin has a Texas History Museum if you feel like a road trip and the state capitol is there.

The Science Museums at Fair Park are a good start - especially the wildlife exhibits in the old Natural History Museum...also take a good walk around the park before the State Fair in October - it's the world's largest Art Deco exhibition complex and a National Historic Landmark.

there are several water parks around... Hawaiian Falls in The Colony is not far from FlowerMound.

Frisco has a sport team called Frisco Roughriders

Arlington has the Rangers

Whiterock Lake area offer the Arboritim (sp) and WR Lake has bike trails

When you get in town all the stores around here usually have stands in their entry way with Dallas Child Magazine for free. This magazine usually has tons of ideas for families.

FTW has great science museum and planatarium--IMAX theater with some cool flix---there is also a summer program at FtW museum for kids but probably too far to drive your 9 yr old next year--my kids did it and they loved it...--From Flower Mound--you might think about the TCC College for Kids in Hurst next summer--day-long program lasting about a month with lots of class choices from art/music and dance/computer stuff/math/science--and just some interesting choices----big line to register just like college cause lots of people use it for daycare for older kids until they are in jr-hi...check it out online

You can tour Ranger stadium at certain times and (I think) Cowboy Stadium...do the movie tours in Las Colinas

There is the TX Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco and Dr. Pepper Museum also
but to be honest--most TX residents haven't done any of these..even though they are neat and interesting...

although it sounds weird--as soon as you can--take a trip to New Braunfels/San Antonio--hill country--heart of TX --great in the early fall or even the winter-- see Fredericksbug--Gonzales--Austin--do Schliterbaum (weather premitting) and Fiesta SA and the Riverwalk--lots of history in SA and Austin--very lovely town--and drive down through the Highland Lakes area west of I-35--go to Lake Buchannan and do the boat tour where they show you the eagles nesting--awesome state park there and the scenery is very lovely--after all rain should be looking good...maybe Lost Maples State Park in the fall--bookings are hard to get then because of the foliage...

I have a 10 year old entering 5th grade at Old Settlers. What schools will your children be going to? Depending on what part of Wellington you are in, they could go to Old Settlers, Liberty, or Wellington. Kinda weird having that many schools so close.

Welcome to Flower Mound.

Welcome to the Mound. It is a great place to raise a family. Since your family is very athletic, you might want to join Lifetime Fitness. There are several pools (inside and out both with huge water slides), many different sport programs and a great child care facility. It seems like everyone in town belongs to Lifetime. It would be a great way for your kids to make some friends before school starts.

Thanks for all of the replies.

We are very much looking forward to moving to Flower Mound in the next 10 days. You all have provided enough details to keep us busy for a long time--which is great because we already have visitors planning to come to town.

Check out Little Pete's on Lake Grapevine it is right down Simmon's Road. You can also hike in the state park. If you are into boating you can rent a boat from Silver Lake Marina in Grapevine and use the lake for some fun. Also, as a previous poster said I would join Lifetime Fitness. Check out the FM Performing Arts Theatre in Parker Square. The Sonoma Grille is an awesome dinner place for you and your wife. Have the Chillean Seabass it is the best on the planet.

Good Luck on your new life in FM
