I was about to write what AlGreen just wrote and posted. I would do a combination with a beautiful runner that compliments the colors in your home. Over the years, we have had quite a few slips and falls on stairs. I too slipped and ended at the bottom of wooden stairs, took about a 3 stair tumble. The good news was, I was ok and I did not feel a thing. More embarrassed than anything. If your wife goes against full wood or combination with a beautiful rug runner, I would get really beautiful, detailed rug like carpet. We had that in a house we owned and it really was the best, most durable carpet. The carpet cleaner told me I was lucky to have it because it will last 100 years. It was great and it looked good for the few years we were there, never ever staining or fading. Plus no one ever fell on those stairs.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
BTW our kids are all 12-17 yrs old. We have 1 that tears down the stairs at light speed, so we will just have to tell that one to slow it down. LOL

LOL!

I'm going to guess it is the 12 year old that does that EXCEPT for when you need them to hurry up then they take their time. Or, it's the 17 year old flying down at light speed when running late or they need something from you. I have a 12 & 16 year old.

Lol, we did the same as kids; especially during our middle/high school years, flying downstairs to make sure we caught the bus. The stairs were wooden, but we had linoleum floors and were more inclined to walk around the house in shoes than barefoot since there was no carpet (which is another reason we weren't prone to slipping). We also kept house shoes by the bed (stepping barefoot onto a hard floor in the winter is no fun).

But again, slipping on wood just isn't easy unless you're trying to do it or simply aren't being careful, which is something you should do even if you have carpet....Okay, I'm done.

For fun you could use some Pledge on the last step or two and set up a camera. Make sure you also polish the handrail real good too.

That's what we have have in our current house and in our last house. The carpet ends up being a centerpeice of sort in the Foyer. We went with a wool carpet and it has held up fine over the 4 years of use.
