Here is the kicker with that......... they are moving here from somewhere else. Not familiar w/ the real estate. If they were to buy a house that was in the $500K and up range that was not updated nor up to par for the rest of the area and they ended up not liking the area and wanted to move back "home"............ THEY WOULD BE STUCK WITH A HOUSE THEY COULD NOT SELL! UNLESS, they put a bunch of money into it to get it up to par for the area and then maybe the right seller came along at the right time with the right offer.

West Plano & Coppell would be your only two options on that list - both good options with excellent public schools, but you're looking at a solid 40-60 minutes of stop-n-go highway driving in rush hour traffic.

The least expensive home on the market in the Park Cities right now that meets that criteria is 3015 Milton Ave (75205). A 1986 home listed at $975k.
The 4,000 sq ft requirement is going to sting in 75230 too. Only 9 properties in the OP's price range that meet that square footage requirement. Over 60 without the square footage requirement.

This one is nice:

10695 Pagewood Dallas TX - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #11499117 - Realtor.com®

As is this one, but it's right next to Preston Road:

5946 Saint Marks Cir Dallas TX - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #11484660 - Realtor.com®

This one's pretty:

11706 Pine Forest Dr Dallas TX - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #11407527 - Realtor.com®

I'm familiar with that area as one of my best friends growing up lived on that street. Lots of road noise from Forest, but otherwise lovely if you like that style of architecture. Personally, I don't.

Input op's criteria and $500k-$700k range (no pool requirement) into listing...8 houses came up, four just reduced from over $700k, and 7 of them are over 4000 square feet (the last one was 3900).

Uh...and there is clearly some updating to do.

as i said earlier i do telecommute for most part but both of us have offices in down town dallas
my friend who lives near prestonwood golf course bought his house for 650 with almost same needs as ours and used 50 more to make some changes. he says that it takes him 25 minutes with tolls to get to down town. i looked at his house pics on facebook and it looks real nice. thank you for the input and link.

I don't think you even looked before you posted.

The first thing that comes up is already wrong...the op wanted 4/4 study...and the first listing that comes up is 4/3 for over $700k.

Put the actual criteria in...you will see there isn't much out there. And I didn't even include a pool.

I am fine with anything between 3500-4000 sq ft but pool and study are a must.

I would open up the search to Richardson. Staying in Dallas County is going to seriously help your commute and quality of life.

Also, the city of Dallas itself is very suburban. There are a couple neighborhoods that would have what you're looking for -- the M-Streets and Lakewood. Those zip codes are 75214, 75206. Both are zoned to the Woodrow Wilson High School, which just recently got a International Baccalaureate program. It's in the DISD, but it is a solid school. The elementary schools are good there too (which helps for resale).

Below are some pictures of the Lakewood neighborhood, as well as other parts of East Dallas and Downtown Dallas.
